Dr. Oz Visits Food Bank & Hiram Johnson High School

Dr. Mehmet Oz,  co-founder of HealthCorps with wife Lisa, made a productive visit to Sacramento recently.  Kids and grownups were equally excited. At the request of an English teacher and students at Hiram Johnson High School, Dr. Oz and Lisa Oz responded - with a visit. It was part of their nationwide tour to kick-off HealthCorps, a nonprofit effort to battle childhood obesity by enlisting young people into a mentoring/monitoring effort at the high school level. Perhaps the English class students nodding off in class decided to come up with a solution by having Dr. Oz  suggest some ways to benefit the students. A serious topic, eating healthy, became a healthy, fun, breakfast food ch

Bowling for scholarships

The Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association in Sacramento focuses its efforts on three main objectives; connecting with the community which it serves and addressing their concerns, participating in and organizing fun and healthy events within the neighborhood, and providing college scholarships for students at Hiram Johnson High School. In order to pass out those scholarships, the TPNA has to raise funds, while at the same time being creative and providing the donors with something that’s a direct benefit to them as well. The upcoming Tahoe Park Annual Bowling Tournament is expected to raise a large share of revenue for this year’s scholarships, and you can help the TPNA make a high school st

By Henrietta Cisneros, freelance correspondent. June 2, 2011 12:00 p.m., PST Dirty Pool: SCTA Style Members of the Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) and a faction of teachers at Hiram Johnson high school are waging a new kind of warfare. The Sacramento City Unified School District board unanimously voted to balance the district's projected “worst-case” budget shortfall of $22.35 million by eliminating financial support for sports, drama, yearbook, newspaper, marching band, cheerleading and speech and debate. The proposal is to eliminate “extra pay for extra-duty stipends,” uniform replacements funds, athletic trainer funds and co-curricular transportation funds for a savings of $1.26 million, according to the district. Board members also voted to reduce the district’s counseling staff by 37 percent, eliminating one assistant principal position at each high school and raising K-3 class sizes at two grade levels. Health professionals urge city to keep fluoride in water

Fluoride in Sacramento’s water was a hot topic during a Sacramento City Council budget discussion Tuesday night. Several members of the public, including dentists, a school nurse and local public health officer urged the City Council to keep fluoride in the city’s drinking water supply. Management Partners, a consulting group hired by the city, suggests that the city stop fluoridating its water supply. The firm states that if the city cuts water fluoridation from its budget, it could retain $836,000 each year. The city has a $43 million budget gap. Glennah Trochet, a health officer with Sacramento County’s Public Health Division, told the City Council that water fluoridation is “one of
