Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market breaks ground in Oak Park

Sacramento, CA | Tim Mason, CEO of California based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, with Mayor Kevin Johnson, Councilman Jay Schenirer and other community memberrs broke ground Wednesday morning in a well attended ceremony in Oak Park.  The market will be built on the north west corner of Broadway and 34th Street. Mayor Kevin Johnson stated that when he came back from college he said "what can we do with this piece of property? As a year or two went by, you realize that properites this size get into the wrong hands."  Johnson bought the land in 2002 and just held it "till the right person came in or the right company said 'we want to do something that will be an assest to the community.

Superheroes combat unhealthy villains

A new league of superheroes will debut on the Sacramento comic book scene this December. The premise of the comic, “Health-E-Man and the Champions of the Chewniverse,” is a band of heroes will fight against the forces that prevent access to good health. In an attempt to promote health awareness in South Sacramento and in communities beyond, the nonprofit Building Healthy Communities has embarked on the comic project to create an innovative digital comic book series that will teach young people healthy eating habits. “We’ve always seen fast food restaurants catering to kids – whether it’s toys, superheroes or happy meals. Instead, the chef and restaurateur was at Time Tested Books with Shawn Harrison, executive director of Soil Born Farms, discussing local agriculture as part of The Sacramento Living Library series. The series is presented by Midtown Monthly and Time Tested Books. Tim Foster, editor of Midtown Monthly, moderated the talk. Don't wait to vaccinate ... Low-cost flu clinics scheduled for south, north Sacramento

Have you gotten your flu vaccine yet?  No one ever “plans” to get sick, but every year, more than 200,000 Americans are hospitalized because of flu or its complications. The best way to prevent influenza is to get a seasonal flu vaccine. The Sacramento County Immunization Assistance Program is sponsoring two low-cost community flu clinics to help you stay healthy. The clinics will take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Pannell Community Center, 2450 Meadowview Road, and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at the Robertson Community Center, 3525 Norwood Avenue. In 2001, two-and-a-half-year-old Kevin Kowalcyk became a victim of food. His death was induced by hamburger meat contaminated with the E. coli bacteria. Kevin’s story is one of many issues discussed in Food, Inc., the recently released documentary directed by Robert Kenner.
