HAIRitage: Scenes from a Barber Shop

Mr. Obadiah Dudley did not suspect that his visit to the barber shop for a trim would turn out the way it did. The result, a black and white photo of a barber leaning in close with scissors aimed at Dudley’s stoic face and snow white beard, has earned him some time in the spotlight. Pulled onto the stage at Master Barber & Beauty Shop’s HAIRitage opening on Saturday, Dudley was presented with a framed image of his photo, a photo which has become the face of HAIRitage. “I wish my father were alive to see this…he made me who I am today. That’s what heritage means to me,” said Dudley. Dudley’s photo, taken by Gerry GOS” Simpson and entitled, WISDOM, is a part of Master Barber & Beauty Shop

In Sacramento, there is a local version of the Hair Wars competition that takes place annually at The Park Ultra Lounge. The competition is held over a three-month period, with some of Sacramento's top salons competing on the runway. New Midtown salon combines arts, family values

Lily Ann Lam grew up in two worlds. Her Chinese parents instilled traditional Eastern values in her, while her upbringing in Sacramento exposed her to American culture. She said the mix comes together in her Midtown salon – Hanami, which opened March 1. Hanami (HAH-nah-me) is a Japanese word that describes the beauty of cherry blossoms, and Lam said it was a natural fit for a salon. “The cherry blossoms are the result of a process,” she said. “They’re beautiful for two weeks ... and that’s like hair. It goes through a process, and then it’s beautiful for a couple of weeks.” Hanami is the first salon for Lam, who has been styling hair professionally for three years. Before that, she put

St. Baldrick's

Hundreds of people will gather to shave their hair off on Monday, March 14, for the St. Baldrick’s Day event at de Vere’s Irish Pub. The event raises awareness of childhood cancer and raises money for research. Robyn Raphael, 46, the CEO of Keaton Raphael Memorial and the mother of Keaton Raphael, who passed away from cancer in 1998, will be hosting the event. “I was challenged in 2003 to shave my hair when I met the founders in Washington,” Raphael said. “I shaved my head in honor of my son, Keaton, then I came back and rallied the Sacramento community to raise money, and we raised a little over $30,000.” The event will take place at de Vere’s at 1521 L St. from 5 - 8 p.m. Last year,

Growls, screams at Soundcheck showcase at Ace of Spades

Ace of Spades hosted its second event Saturday night, an "all locals" show called "SacShows Presents: Soundcheck", featuring performances by Oneira, Above The City, Carcerys Vale, Batten Down Your Heart, City of Kings, The Winter Formal and Ten After Two. The theme for the night seemed to be "screamo," and it was delivered in spades (pun intended) with the exception of maybe The Winter Formal, which leans more toward sung vocals. The tattooed and skintight jeans-wearing band members whipped their hair through quick 20- to 30-minute sets, cheered on by pierced and gauged teenage boys and girls, while overly aggressive males swung their fists around and ran into each other hard in the circ

DeVere's is Balding

De Vere's Irish Pub held its inaugural St. Baldrick's event Monday, raising more than $81,000 for cancer research, $10,000 of which came from De Vere's. The pub's roped-off sidewalk was packed with spectators trying to get a glimpse of local participants shaving their locks to conquer kids' cancer. De Vere's had 221 shavees lined up for their turn to get snipped. Publicly displayed on the patio, shavees winced when they felt the cold steel clippers reach deep down to the scalp. The participants' reactions caused perpetual laughter, since there was a four-barber-rotation, and each head took only a minute to shave. The crowd stirred when Shawn Eldredge, a City Council candidate for Distri

Master Barber & Beauty Shop celebrates 35 years in new location

Master Barber Shop was established in 1958 and was acquired by Earlie D. and Mary Brown in December of 1974. During that time, the shop was located on Stockton Blvd. and 7th Ave. Since those early days, Master Barber & Beauty Shop, has had several locations. Each location being better than the last. In 1989, sons Rodney and Marichal, joined the family business. The late owner and master barber, Earlie D. Brown, established business in the hair industry in the mid 1940's with Brown's Barber Shop (two locations, San Francisco and Marin City). What started out as nothing more than a dream and a dime and a nail in his pocket has turned into a family business. He died in February 1998. Mary Br

Hair brings the '60s to Sacramento

The spirit of the '60s was alive Thursday night as the Artistic Differences theater company staged a dizzying performance of the musical Hair to a sold-out crowd. Second in a series of three summer concerts entitled "Summer of Rock," Hair incorporated the entire Harlow's audience. A six-piece rock band backed a cast of 17 singers who danced through a standing-room-only crowd of more than 250 people. The "tribal rock concert" opened with a live Jimi Hendrix-like performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" reminiscent of the Woodstock version. It flowed seamlessly into "Aquarius," a hit song in 1969. Hair's plot revolves around Claude (multiple actors), an East Village New Yorker who receiv

Hair styles for spring; the natural look

Take a walk around midtown and it won’t be long before you realize that Sacramento has a wealth of hair salons. Trendy, fancy, casual, fun salons -- it's clear that we live in a city that cares a great deal about its hair. Spring brings many new hair trends, and the Sacramento Press checked into a few salons to see what's new, what's next and what's hot. The economy hasn't had too much of a negative impact on salon owners, apparently. Many of them said that business has never been better. “Last year was one of our best years,” said Keri Carr, the owner of Honey Salon. The economy has had an effect on the styles that woman have chosen for spring. The boho/hippie look is popular and women

Sac Barackomania: Bee covers haircut

The Sacramento Bee showcased on its homepage Saturday a feature article on the growing popularity of the haircut sported by the soon-to-be Chief Executive. The Bee reported that Obama's barber is known only as Zariff and says the cut costs $21. The reporter then visited numerous barbers in Sacramento to get comments from cutters about the cut. Yes, indeed, customers have come in to ask for some Barack barbering. Since I needed a haircut for the local Inaugural festivities, I went to my barber, Master Barber Melton, who cuts hair in a shop a few doors down from a Starbucks. Isn't anyplace a few doors down from a Starbucks? He said that customers have come in asking for the Obama cut. It'

Honey salon

This week I was given a very soothing hair cut. I visited Honey Salon located on 19th St. between H and I. Not only was I greeted by warm faces and smiles, but also by a beautiful atmosphere. This salon exhibited art from a local artist, throughout the salon. Keri Carr, the owner, finds a new artist every two months to display their art for sale. When I first walked in, there was a man that approached me and immediately offered me a beverage. The salon offers an assortment of drinks ranging from tea, coffee, hot chocolate, wine, beer, and for those who are just simply parched, water. I was really impressed by the plethora of drinks, but that was until I received my shampoo. After K
