New Greyhound depot opening Tuesday

Sacramento’s new River District Greyhound bus terminal – the “greenest” in the country with a LEED silver certification – will replace the L Street location and begin operating July 19. “This is a community-friendly terminal that really makes transportation by Greyhound bus viable for everyone in the city,” said City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning. She praised the support from multiple politicians and the business community the project has gotten. Located across the street from a police substation that will possibly become police headquarters, the new bus terminal at 420 Richards Blvd. provides a safe transit point for the community, accordi

Mayor spreads word about the benefits of an entertainment/sports complex

Mayor Kevin Johnson is currently in the process of visiting Sacramento’s six major counties to discuss the benefits of a future entertainment and sports complex along the stretch of what used to be the old Southern Pacific railyards downtown. At the mayor’s weekly press conference Tuesday, Johnson, who had just visited El Dorado County and the city of Folsom the day before, called his visits “authentic outreach.” Johnson is going on a bus tour Thursday to visit regions of El Dorado County, Davis, Roseville and Rancho Cordova to seek input from the communities there, he said. This city-to-city outreach is part of the the mayor’s Think Big Coalition. Johnson said the four guiding principl

Emaciated dog rescued but veterinary bills very high

On Thanksgiving morning, a woman out walking came upon an emaciated, starving and freezing little dog. He was lying on a thin sheet curled up in the tightest ball under a tree. She took him home and bundled him up and gave him food. It soon became clear he needed emergency vet care. Mueller's Pet Medical Center initially thought he might have stomach cancer, but surgery revealed he had eaten a corn cob. Because he has been in starvation mode for so long, his recovery has been complicated. He weighed in at 22 pounds. He should weigh about 45 pounds. He has been receiving 24-hour care since Saturday, and his bills are about $1,200. He is a very sweet and loveable greyhound mix. The new own

Greyhound terminal moves forward

The Sacramento City Planning Commission approved planning entitlements for construction of a temporary Greyhound bus station on Richards Boulevard Thursday night, paving the way for the relocation of the West Coast's second-busiest bus terminal. Concerns involving transients, fencing, pedestrian access and bicycle parking were also addressed during the meeting. In a unanimous vote, seven commissioners granted the necessary special permit and planned unit development guideline amendment to enable Mogavero Notestine Associates to build a bus station at 420 Richard Blvd. on about 1.75 acres in the Discovery Centre development in the River District. Commission Chairman Michael Notestine, a p

Diverted Greyhound

Red  Cross volunteers Mike and Joyce Evans wrap Alicha Rogers and her son Ke'von Burton of Portland, OR in a Linus Blanket. The Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to a call early tonight from Roger Muckel, manager of the Sacramento Greyhound Bus terminal. Rogers had left Las Vegas yesterday, headed for Portland, and landed in Sacramento. The California Highway Patrol near Redding were not allowing travel any further north due to the storm. Two busloads of travelers were brought to the Sacramento terminal. Many of them spent a cold night at the terminal. Muckel said they were brought to Sacramento's bus station due to safety reasons for their passengers. The Red C

Relocating Downtown Greyhound

This Tuesday the 28th, City Council will vote to authorize construction of the new Greyhound Terminal Building on Richards Blvd. The plan is to have Greyhound terminal moved by April 1, 2012 when the lease at its current location (703 L Street) expires. There is also the possibility that relocation may need to occur sooner if the landlord at 703 L Street exercises its right to an early termination of the current lease. The City Council also plans to suspend the traditional process of competitive bidding for building design because it could extend the project completion time beyond Greyhound's lease expiration date. Money to pay for this project will come from the cities General Fund (Fund

Preservation Commission Approves Depot Plan

On Thursday night, Sacramento's Preservation Commission held a special meeting to review plans to expand and refurbish Sacramento's historic passenger depot. The depot's environmental impact report includes two alternatives: a "move the depot" option that would involve rolling the historic building 400 feet north to meet the new track alignment, or a "don't move the depot" option that would build an expanded station between the current depot and the new track alignment. The commission was asked to provide their recommendation to City Council as to whether the city should move the station or not. Union Pacific's railroad tracks adjacent to the depot currently form a sharp S-curve that limi
