On July 23, Grant Napear, the announcer for the Sacramento Kings, is putting on a charity golf tournament at Catta Verdera Country Club called Fairway to the Future. The funds raised from this event will go directly to the FUTURE Foundation. This foundation provides mentors with backgrounds in business to underprivileged high school students as well as scholarships for college. When children are brought into this world, the universal hope for them is a loving, supportive, healthy life, with loving parents, a good education, and every need met with the utmost satisfaction. The sad truth is that even in our own Sacramento community, children are placed into the foster care system. Child abuse, neglect, drug addiction, and poverty are only a few of the nightmares faced by many young members of our city. These kids never asked to be in these situations nor do they have much of a say as to what happens to them including where they live or where they go to school. This is where Sacramento Child Advocates comes in! They have Given a voice and protected the rights of ove
Pedestrian traffic may have appeared somewhat peculiar in Midtown on Saturday. Merry crowds of golfers, and a pirate or two, took to the streets in droves for the first annual Albie Puttin’ Pub and Putt Crawl presented by Go-Girl Energy Drink. Tickets were $25 for walk-ups and $20 for those who preregistered. All proceeds from the event went straight to Albie Aware Inc., a foundation dedicated to supporting women struggling with breast cancer. Executive Director Cindy Love, was a close friend to Albie Carson. The foundation was formed after Carson died of breast cancer in 2002. “We started the foundation because she was not given the proper testing after she was diagnosed, and we would
Golf, pub crawl and breast cancer are usually not three topics you see together. But then again, Albie Puttin’ is not your typical pub crawl. Saturday, Sacramentans can play a nine-hole game of miniature golf and enjoy drink specials all while helping breast cancer patients. All ticket sales will benefit the Albie Aware organization — founded to help provide resources such as paying medical fees to breast cancer patients. This is the first pub crawl event fundraiser that Albie Aware is holding, sponsored by Go-Girl Energy Drink. The crawl will begin with at noon Saturday at deVere’s Irish Pub. Each restaurant or bar has made its own themed hole and will feature drink and food specials,
Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri
Break out your plaid and visors for a day on the golf course with Sacramento native and current NBA player Matt Barnes. Barnes and other high-profile sports figures are in town for the second annual Athletes vs Cancer Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Invitational. The former Sacramento King began the foundation, according to his website, in 2009 after Barnes lost his mother Ann to cancer in 2007. Athletes vs Cancer spreads awareness and provides screening opportunities. “Athletes have a positive influence,” Barnes said. When athletes voice their support, it brings more light to serious situations he said. The Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 at this year's event. All proceeds from the tour
This Saturday, July 24, Athletes vs Cancer (AVC) will hold the annual community event to support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver subsequent support to cancer patients. Founded in 2009 by Matt Barnes in memory of his mother, the Foundation has expanded to recruit additional athletes and coaches touched by cancer. It’s primary focus in 2010 is to secure a mobile cancer screening van. The vehicle will visit low-income neighborhoods providing free cancer screenings, awareness and resources from AVC and its partner organizations. This awareness-raising celebrity golf invitational takes place Saturday, July 24 at the lovely Woodcreek Golf Course in Rosevi

An article in the SacBee today discusses a Legislative Analysts’s suggestion that junior colleges either drop PE classes, or that the colleges be paid less to offer them than the level of state funding provided for classes that are deemed more academic in content. These are the one-unit classes that are offered in subjects such as golf, tennis, and bowling. The inference is that these classes are not worthwhile and don’t deserve to be subsidized at the same level as other classes. This seems like an odd standard to apply. As the article points out, students wanting to graduate or transfer are typically required to have one of these classes. What the article doesn’t point out is that that
Clone golf clubs are not golf clubs made to OEM or original manufacturer standards as some people suspect. They are the perfect starting point for anyone who is just starting to play golf. Whilst they aren't the cheapest clubs you can get, they are great value and they come with a pedigree pretty close to the top club manufacturers. Additionally, they are a reality in today's golf supply industry. Golf Discount Center is an example of a company that selects only the best golf components that have the playability to take you to the next level of competition. Clone Golf Clubs are not for you if you attach importance to brand names. Most say that they look very similar to their top brand equi
