The grid has never been so alive as during the Second Saturdays of spring and summer. April 11 saw thousands of Sacramentans, suburbians, families, hipsters, dogs, couples and friends enjoying the diverse offerings of galleries and nightlife in Midtown. For those who haven't made a trip to Second Saturday, here's an idea of what you missed at April's Second Saturday. 20th Street Art Gallery hosted its 50/50 art show with 3,500 paintings decorating its walls and what seemed like just as many people crowding around the interior to catch a glimpse of each artists' collections. Outside, the Zoo Human Project played mellow acoustic music to an audience of seated and standing fans. Around 8 p
The art scene continues to expand in Sacramento. I recently had a chance to view its newest gallery, the 429 Gallery located on J at 5th Street. One thing I immediately noticed that separates the 429 Gallery from the rest in Sacramento is its emphasis on Chinese art. The entire gallery is comprised of beautiful modern Chinese paintings. Situated in downtown's Chinatown, the building used to be the Bank of Hong Kong. "[This building] just begs for Chinese art," says Brent Hamilton, one of the gallery owners. "It begs for those colors and all the little novelties, and the way they dressed their paintings." Not only does the gallery express the changing faces of Chinese culture, it also pr
Sactown magazine, one of the newest regional magazines to our area just released their second anniversary issue. What better way to celebrate its second anniversary than to have some of its award-winning photography shown at the Viewpoint Gallery? From December 12, 2008 to January 3, 2009 the Viewpoint Gallery will be showing, "The Photography of Sactown Magazine: The First Two Years." Sactown has won a number of awards in the relatively short time it has been around. This year, Sactown won a National City & Regional Magazine Award for its June/July photo essay, "In Harm's Way" and also a Maggie Award for its August/September issue. Sactown was also a winner at the Communication Arts Ph
Have you ever attended a yoga class and looked around at the more skilled participants with their nimble bodies and perfect poses? Or maybe you are one of those yoga aficionados, starting your day doing the tree pose or the downward facing dog. The beauty of the body is truly revealed in the art of yoga. A glimpse in the mirror while doing a yoga pose is all the proof you need that body and mind coming together is truly art-worthy. The BOLD MARK Gallery has taken this concept on for their next exhibit, "Balanced Bodies, Centered Minds." During the months of December and January the gallery will feature both yoga sculpture and live yoga demonstrations. All of the artwork will draw from th
Alan Osborne is the owner of the Art Foundry, located on 1021 R Street. I sat down with Alan to find out what brought him to Sacramento and what kept him here. His expertise in bronze casting has brought renowned artists to Sacramento to work with him and castings that have been made in the Art Foundry can be seen throughout the city. What brought you to Sacramento? What actually brought me here was this building. When I had come in to look at the kiln that was for sale that used to be Earthworks and the woman was that had bought it from - the previous owner was downsizing so she was just going to move out. I went over to Fred David that same day and rented the space because I knew that
Please scroll through the pictures at the top of the page. Some art lovers lament the loss of a once-lesser-known-phenomena called Second Saturday, when you could see art, eat finger food and sip on wine without feeling like herded cattle. The popularity of Second Saturday has skyrocketed its numbers of attendees in past months and some lack the motivation to bear the masses and fight for a space to appreciate something that requires time and thought. There is a place where art lovers go for art, where you can move your elbows freely and get a chance to know the artists. Where you ask? Off the beaten path… Blocks from midtown’s hustle and bustle you can find these treasures that may be
