The local Sacramento Water for People Committee is hosting a fundraising event on Thursday, March 11th at 6pm at the Urban Hive (http://theurbanhive.squarespace.com/) located at 1931 H Street in the heart of midtown Sacramento. The purpose of the event is to raise money to help bring clean drinking water and sanitation services to thousands of people in the developing world. At the same time, the event is in celebration of World Water Day 2010 – the theme of which is: Communicating Water Quality Challenges and Opportunities. The theme of World Water Day hits close to home, given our State's current water supply and quality challenges. Whether in California or the developing world, managing
Jessica Summers-Miller is the owner of Loft 1513, a very chic clothing boutique located in San Francisco. Originally from Sacramento and Hiram Johnson High School graduate, doing a fashion show and sale in Sacramento was an easy choice for Jessica. Jessica also happened to be long time friends with Marcus and Kolea Marquez, who own L Wine Lounge, which was the venue for the night. The show came together in a very short period of time as they elected to do much more than just the typical fashion show. Proceeds from the sale portion of the fashion show as well as the bar tab would be donated to the Red Cross for Haiti earthquake relief. Jessica said she always wanted to do a s
With the unparalleled devistation in Haiti, people have been coming up with creative means to raise money for relief efforts despite our dire economic times. People like Charlie Simpson, 7, from Fulham, west London who set out to raise £500 ($812.25 US) by organizing a bike-a-thon has amassed over £110,000 ($162,450 US) and Lexi Caruthers, 10, from Encinitas, CA who hoped to raise $10 selling hand painted rocks that she gathered over the weekend raised $124.81. In Sacramento, things are no different; nightclubs such as Punchline Comedy Club and Marilyn's on K have organized benefit shows, Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe has organized a bake sale and now The Coffee Garden is hosting an artwork raff

Thanksgiving normally brings family and friends together around the dinner table, but only a Sacramento Thanksgiving brings them together around the Capitol Mall roundabout, whooping and yelling on bicycles. Give thanks for the Appetite Enhancement Bike Ride. The annual underground bicycle parade attracted over 500 people to the California Stage early Thursday morning. R and 25th streets were littered with road bikes, penny-farthings, low-riders, vintage cruisers, every bike imaginable, plus a giant toaster mobile. DJ Larry Rodriguez' international beats and raffle ramblings rang out over the block. What started out as a casual ride with a dozen bikers 21 or 22 years ago — no one can rea
The Asian American Journalist Association held it's third annual Photo Showcase and Silent Auction at the 20th Street Art Gallery on Tuesday. The auction benefited student scholarships, journalism training and mentorship programs, according to Chelsea Phua, events coordinator for the AAJA. "We raised $24,000 last year from sponsorships and auctioning photos," Phua said. "We are hoping to match or exceed that amount." The photographs were donated by The Sacramento Bee and The Associated Press. Photos exhibited included president Barack Obama on inauguration day and moving images from the Laura Ling and Euna Lee rally at the capitol earlier this year. "We want to have lots of fun and rai

"This will be a fun-filled day of food, music and games where attendees will get a great feeling of being part of our community," Rubicon owner Glynn Phillips said. "I'm hoping everyone comes out for a plate of ribs and a pint of beer to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento." The festival will include live performances by four local bands, fun games and activities for kids including a climbing wall and a jump house, raffle prizes and a walk-a-thon. "Pelt her, pelt her, all the way down!" A lively crowd chanted their intentions as they pelted a wig-wearing bingo winner with crumpled paper score cards. The ritual was repeated with all ten of the winners during last Wednesday's first ever Drag Queen Bingo at Hamburger Patties. Approximately 75 prize-hungry people showed up to the 7:00 p.m. event produced by Outword magazine. The night's proceeds went to Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE), an organization that provides crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The idea for Drag Queen Bingo came about a year ago, said Hamburger Patties co-owner Richard Borill. Borill and fellow owner
ORANGEVALE, CALIFORNIA, June 22, 2009 --- In the summer of 1969, five hundred thousand young people converged on a dairy farm in rural New York for "three days of peace and music". "Woodstock" defined a generation. In celebration of the 40th anniversary, Grangestock will be presented July 11, an outdoor festival of fun, food & music at the Orangevale Grange's beautiful natural amphitheatre. Grangestock will begin at 11:00am and feature more than a dozen “far out” bands and entertainers from across the state, providing music and laughs for a day-long spoof of Woodstock and an era that brought us hippies, hot pants & Hubert Humphrey. The festivities will last until “whenever, man”, ending
Take a million-dollar inventory of LPs, CDs and DVDs, arrange them on several 80-foot-long tables and place them into a 10,000 square foot room for three days. This is the recipe for Capital Public Radio's (CPR) annual Used Record and CD Sale. It will commence on Friday night with a "Preview Party" from 6 - 9 p.m. For a $20 cover charge, people can get a jump start on the musical feast while enjoying live music, food and wine. On Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., the public can dig in for free and search through the leftovers. It all takes place in suite 172 of the "Howe 'bout Arden" shopping center at 2100 Arden Way. All-in-all there will be approximately 45,000 vinyl records
It has never occurred to me that Father's Day weekend always happens at the same time as the summer solstice. Is that by coincidence? The longest, sunniest day of the year falls on the weekend that we celebrate our Dad's. That's kind of cool! At least for those of us who celebrate them. Otherwise, think of it as an extended day for you to be having fun! This weekend is packed with family friendly events for the whole family to enjoy at budget friendly prices. There are a few things I've mentioned that are a little more pricey... but they sound so fun! Whatever your budget is and whomever you'd like to spend your time with, check out what this weekend has in store. Thursday 6.18 Class: Sm
Clouds of hairspray were being shot every which way, cameras were flashing and frantic girls and boys were scrambling around a tightly-packed room to line up for preliminary judging. This was the scene in the backroom of Barcode Nightclub at the finale round of the Hair Games 2009 charity fundraiser last night. The chosen recipient of funds for this year is Auburn-based Village Care International (VCI), an organization focused on empowering African widows and around 30,000 orphans that have become victims of the AIDS/HIV pandemic. Beginning on April 25 and continuing for four consecutive Saturdays, 12 top salons from around the Sacramento region have been competing in four separate semi
Photography, music and great food and drinks from popular local joints will collide on Saturday, May 16 at Beatnik Studios during their “Boobie Bash” breast cancer fundraiser. “I belong to a networking group, and the president introduced me to Katie [Erickson], who was looking for a venue to do this event,” said Wes Davis, co-owner of Beatnik Studios, a photography studio in downtown Sacramento. Erickson is a participant in the upcoming Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which will take place in San Francisco on July 11 and 12. The walk has a goal of each walker raising $1,800 for the “Avon Breast Cancer Crusade,” and Erickson is on her own personal crusade to raise even more than that.
The first two weekends of the Hair Games 2009 charity fundraiser have come to an end, and you can almost cut the tension with a pair of shears. Barcode Nightclub held the first week's competition and drummed up excitement with a performance by students from Citrus Heights' Jerry Lee Beauty College, who decked out their models and dancers in unconventional wedding gowns and not-so-traditional wedding-day hairstyles. Following the brides' performance was a face-off between Salons Within and downtown Space 07 Salon. In a flurry of insane hair and using an arsenal of hairspray and dye, Salons Within took the stage first with a Barbie doll-themed show. The audience was given a rendition of Ch
In a fusion of music, lights and hair design, 12 of Sacramento's top salons will be putting their styling talents on display in a month-long competition to raise funds for Village Care International (VCI). Hair Games 2009 begins Saturday, April 25, at 11 p.m. with its first semi-final round and will continue the next three Saturdays. The semi-finalists' fates will then be decided in a final competition to determine the "style champion" on May 30. The event is being coordinated by the owner of Granite Bay's Bella Toscana Salon, Jo Ann Baumert, and Maly's salon product distributor, Patty Neher. Salons from all around the Sacramento area will be participating in the Games, including Rosevil
It seems more so now than ever before that organizations across the board are reaching out for help. Despite all of the "doom-and-gloom" being reported on in the news, I consider myself to be a fairly positive person with an optomistic outlook on life. However, reality tends to sink in a little when you find that local mainstays within your hometown are being threatened. These times of "crisis" are when charity organizations and community support foundations see a significant spike in demand for their services. Every week there are events being held to raise money and awareness for various causes that will likely relate to every person at some point in their life. This week, I stumbled upo
