Mother-daughter entrepreneurs Darcy McNie and Corey De Roo have their hands full this weekend with the grand opening of their newest French Cuff Consignment store in Davis. The pair that opened a second-hand clothing store business by the same name in a Midtown Victorian four years ago is now operating three stores — two a block apart on J Street and a third in downtown Davis. They've built a list of clients with their girlfriend-next-door conversations and the cups of tea they hand out with clothing advice. A handful of local businesses recently won $500 grants from Intuit Inc. as part of its "Love a Local Business" competition, in which customers nominate businesses for grants. Three businesses are awarded weekly, and nine local businesses have already won the grant from the software company known for its TurboTax and QuickBook programs. "Sacramento overwhelmingly wants to support their local businesses," said Heather McLellan, a director at Intuit Inc. "There's a real wish for them to thrive here." Sacramento's holiday ice-skating rink is coming to Midtown this year, thanks to the Midtown Business Association. Members of its board voted Wednesday night to keep the palm-tree-studded capital's winter skating rink tradition alive by having an outdoor rink installed on the street of one the hottest blocks in town — 20th Street from J Street to the alley, between the Marrs Building's new businesses at 1050 20th St. and the Sacramento News & Review (SN&R) across the street.
