Carly DuHain refers to herself as an underground musician. No representation, no management, just a singer songwriter trying to make it in Sacramento on her own volition. Aiming to be successful in a town loaded with musicians and bands, DuHain has her own approach. “I do the opposite of everyone else,” she says. “I don’t really follow self-promotion trends.” She outlines everything a musician needs to do to be known, working every local media angle, playing every venue, never stopping. “I’d just rather take my time and do it organically.” While her gut-instinct style rarely leads her to play the same venue back-to-back, DuHain has two upcoming shows at the Fox & Goose. Over 30 teams of bike scavengers took to the streets of downtown Sacramento Saturday in a race against time to interpret clues, hunt for items and complete challenges for the Bicycle Kitchen’s annual Hunt the Grid bike scavenger hunt. If cyclists didn’t know Sacramento before the hunt, they sure do now. The hunt, now in its third year, is an event where teams of four hit the pavement and try to solve clues based on well-known venues and random oddities of Sacramento. Bike Kitchen staff member and event organizer Ryan Sharpe, 32, planned the event with his staff non-stop for six weeks. “No one is going to look at the city in the same way,” he said. As one of five judges in City Councilman Rob Fong’s 4th Annual Turkey Cook Off on Monday, I nibbled on slices of 16 cooked birds. Sixteen! In all my 31 years, I have never had so many consecutive tastes of separate turkeys. The event was a benefit for Loaves & Fishes’ Thanksgiving meal, which will be held Tuesday.
