Did you know there is a hero in all of us? A parole officer, two teen lifeguards, a one hundred year old senior citizen, a doctor, and a scientist were among those recognized by the American Red Cross for their life changing efforts in the capital region. Nominated by their peers, these honorees exemplified the characteristics of a hero such as courage, selflessness, and perseverance. They were recognized at a luncheon at the Doubletree Hotel in Arden on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Here are the award recipients and their deeds. RED CROSS DAY AT THE CAPITOL In honor of March being Red Cross Month, representatives from the American Red Cross offered free workshops to Capitol workers on how to "Be Red Cross Ready". Disasters strike at any time and without warning - so it's important to learn how you can prepare your workplace or home for any disaster. Displays of various Red Cross services, including Pet First Aid, Wilderness Training and CPR and AED training were located on the west steps of the Capitol. Start snorkeling today. Seems simple enough! Why do I need a class to, “Learn to Snorkel?” Snorkeling may seem easy enough, except when you realize you are in the Ocean and there is a problem. I found that “Education today” and practice really allowed me to enjoy my trip to Mexico. Training allowed me to solve my own problems. I saw so many other “cruisers” who hated the experience, because they had an issue and didn’t know there was a simple fix. My training allowed me to learn in a pool; make mistakes and solve problems.
