Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Sacramento

Every year on May 5, Mexico and parts of the United States celebrate Cinco de Mayo in honor of the victory won by the Mexican Army in 1862. Now it's time for Sacramento to celebrate with these restaurant specials and events around town. Here’s a round-up of Cinco de Mayo celebrations: Event: Cinco de Mayo Celebration Time: 5 - 10 p.m. Thursday. Location: Zócalo (A Taste of Mexico) on 18th Street and Capitol Avenue. Information: Zócalo (A Taste of Mexico) is throwing a street party that will include live music, performing artists The Midnight Players, and DJ Al Ruiz will be the entertainment for the night. The Big Lebowski Comes to Marilyn's on K

The Dude abides. Twelve years after cult classic "The Big Lebowski" starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman hit theaters, fans are still celebrating the film’s unpredictable and sometimes confusing plot, startling brute violence and hysterical, expletive-riddled dialogue, prime for quoting. Marilyn’s on K Street hosted The Big Lebowski Fiesta Friday night for these fans, and the White Russians and robes were suitably flowing. Marilyn’s deserves some party-throwing props. Filipino Fiesta to Celebrate Heritage and Independence

Get ready to dance, eat and learn at the Filipino Fiesta of Sacramento's (FFS) 35th annual celebration Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jose Rizal Community Center. About 5,000 people are expected to attend the celebration marking 112 years of the Philippines' independence from Spanish rule. "We celebrate the fiesta to show our uniqueness, educate about our traditions and share our heritage," Cora Emery, FFS chairman of marketing, wrote in an e-mail. "The fiesta is one way to connect our communities so other cultures learn our contributions to this multigenerational society." Celebrating Cinco de Mayo 2009: Sacramento's party guide

Commemorating the victory of the Mexican troops over the French army, Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of The Battle of Puebla in 1862. During the French-Mexican war, an outnumbered Mexican militia battled, and conquered, the French forces. Many often mistake the Mexican Holiday for the country's Independence Day, which actually takes place on September 16.
