After a year of negotiations, economic reports and financial cartwheels by city officials and Sacramento Kings owners, NBA Commissioner David Stern said it appears the deal for a new Sacramento arena is dead. “I am extremely disappointed on behalf of both the Maloofs and the city of Sacramento,” Stern said at a New York press conference Friday, “but I think there is nothing further to be done.” Stern said the NBA Board of Governors met Thursday with the Sacramento Kings team owners, the Maloofs, and – after hearing a “detailed and thorough” presentation – Stern said the board came to some simple conclusions. “(In Orlando) we had an agreement in principle – a framework, a handshake deal
The question of whether Sacramento will get a new sports arena heated up this year, as Sacramento Kings owners threatened to relocate the team to Anaheim and potential arena sites – such as a land swap with Cal Expo – came and went. Despite an emotional rollercoaster ride for Kings fans this year, supporters of the team refused to throw up their hands in defeat. Here’s what 2011 looked like from the bleachers. As plans for a land swap between the state fairgrounds at Cal Expo and the current Natomas arena site fell through, a task force appointed by Mayor Kevin Johnson recommended that Sacramento developer group ICON-Taylor explore the viability of building an arena in the downtown area.
The Kings were welcomed to a packed Power Balance Pavilion on Thursday night following their Media Day. They were divided into two teams who played four games up to twenty points each. The crowd was pleasantly delighted by the performance of their Kings, cheering for rookie Isaiah Thomas and Francisco Garcia. The final count of the games broke even at 2-2, but overall the crowd won knowing that their Kings have returned.
A lively group of local music lovers gathered at Blue Lamp Thursday night to take in a riling show. Local band I'm Dirty Too opened for the all-female group, Girl iIn a Coma, while Michigan-natives The Detroit Cobras finished off the night. A hip animated crowd shuffled into the venue around 8 o'clock, anticipating the night's stellar performances. The laid back crowd consisted of casual-cool music fans who mingled, ordered drinks and visited the merchandise table before the show. As the audience patiently awaited the opening act, members of Girl in a Coma sipped energy drinks at a back table as they met excited fans and graciously posed for photos. Jenn Alva, the band's bassist, admit

The extensive gear set up inside Harlow's Monday night foreshadowed a serious rock show taking place for the gathered crowd of 200. Drum kit and amp stacks on the stage covered in black cloth, two extra soundboards at the back of the house and side-stage, multiple guitar road cases – this band was here for here for some in-your-face rock. In a performance promoting its new record “The Trouble with Angels,” Filter returned to the "Short Bus”-era formula that worked so well the first time around in the mid-’90s and gave fans the hard-charging riffs they expected to hear from the former alt-rock chart toppers. Taking the stage dressed as the Unabomber, the former Nine Inch Nails guitarist
For those wanting to release some stress after a rough day of voting on Tuesday, Arco Arena was apparently the place to do it. Four-time Grammy-nominated band Godsmack was in town, delivering the hard rock and splitting the eardrums of a crowd that struggled to fill the lower level of the arena. After energetic warmup sets by bands Drowning Pool and Five Finger Death Punch, the marketing machine was in full swing as the anxious crowd was shown a promotional video touting Godsmack frontman Sully Erna’s solo album, “Avalon,” which we were reminded was available at the merchandise booth. Next, we were treated to a dated documentary clip connecting hard rock/metal music with devil worshippi

The 70s rock super group ‘Bad Company’ performed on stage together at Thunder Valley Casino and Resort on Friday night. The three original members of the band; Paul Rodgers on vocals, Mick Ralphs on guitar and drummer Simon Kirke took the stage singing ‘Bad Company’ classics and wowing the crowd. Boz Burrell, who died in 2006, was the only founding member not present. Bad Company is well-known for timeless hits like: ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’, ‘Can’t Get Enough’, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy’, and ‘Shooting Star’. In the 70s they recorded five albums and one in the 80s. After a turbulent on-and-off career, with the band splitting and reuniting several times, Bad Company got back together last
What do a marmot, nihilists and bowling all have in common? If you thought of the 1998 Coen Brothers cult classic “The Big Lebowski," you must have remembered how the protagonist encountered all those things. Capitol Bowl celebrated its third annual “Big Lebowski” party with a quiz about the movie, bowling, white Russians and a viewing of the movie on the lanes. “If it has something to do with ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and it’s in the area, I’m here, man,” Dude impersonator Jeremy Johnston, 35, said. A recurring locale in the movie is a Los Angeles bowling alley where the protagonist, the Dude, and his friends/bowling partners practice. The constant theme of bowling is present throughout the
After nearly 5 years away from the spotlight, the Goo Goo Dolls are releasing a new album titled 'Some For the Rest of Us' (August 31, 2010). To help promote the new album, the band brought their grunge style to the Park Ultra Lounge were they performed for 100 select fans of the radio station - Now100.5. The Goo Goo Dolls walked on stage at 4:00pm and played for about 20 minutes. They performed three new songs ‘The Sweetest Lie’, ‘Home’, and ‘As I Am’ and an older but fan favorite ‘Slide’. From the bands first appearance to their final song, it was obvious just how much the fans loved them. Between songs, Brian (the night DJ from Now100.5) asked the band non-scripted fan questions and w
Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri
I was truly fascinated by Stephen Gillis’ article “City Council Candidates Use Facebook to Connect With Community” today. In my view, as someone working with Social Media daily, I would say Steve Cohn is not using Social Media as an effective part of his campaign. On the other hand, Chris Little has 716 fans on his Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Elect-Chris-Little/216446910449?ref=ts) to Cohn’s 214. Because Little has been so diligent in using his Facebook and Twitter accounts as a communications vehicle to voters, he has made up ground on a 16 year career politician in just 5 months. The result is nearly 1000 lawn signs being displayed on individual yards throughout Dist

"How do you feel about the Sacramento Kings?" When I was first asked this question a few weeks ago, my initial response was "luke warm". I am from the Bay Area, and, besides a youthful dalliance with the Detroit Pistons (spurred on by an Adrian Dantley signed basketball I received for Christmas, 1987), a lifelong Warriors fan. Now, you might think I would hate the Kings, seeing as they and the Warriors are geographic rivals and all, but you'd be mistaken. I don't hate the Kings. I hate the Lakers. I hate them intensely. And, as the proverb goes, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". For the last 20 years, the Warriors have been mostly impotent, unable to present any
Inside an electrifying ARCO Arena reminiscent of 2002, the Sacramento Kings (13-16) battled the Los Angeles Lakers (24-15) in a thrilling double overtime game. The arena was standing-room only for the Dec. 26 game. Lakers fans decked in purple and gold peppered the crowd of 17,345 that night. After a long and hard fight, the Kings faltered in the end to the defending NBA champions, losing 112-103. It was an emotional loss for fans and the players and Kings Head Coach Paul Westphal wore the team's emotions on his face. "We wanted that game so bad," Westphal said somberly. "(The Kings) did everything but get the last rebound with four tenths of a second." In the last seconds of the firs
Kings fans proudly received the three newest members of the team Saturday evening at Marshall Park. The park was a festive sight with families and fans clad in purple and white awaiting the arrival of University of Memphis guard Tyreke Evans, Israeli forward Omri Casspi and University of Washington forward Jon Brockman. The players were bestowed with numbered jerseys for the first time since the draft picks were announced. Evans wearing number 13, Casspi with number 18, and Brockman number 40. Season ticket holder Joseph Smith expressed his admiration for the Kings and the Maloof brothers for bringing the community and families together at such an event. "It keeps us going as a family,
