Mayor Kevin Johnson on Thursday sounded resigned to the idea Sacramento may soon lose its professional basketball team. A day after his first conversation with the Sacramento Kings' owners in more than a month, Johnson said Anaheim and its city-owned arena, the Honda Center, have this city beaten on too many fronts. Anaheim has a lucrative TV market and the Walt Disney Company’s Disneyland and other Fortune 500 companies that can buy sponsorships and luxury boxes and suites – critical revenue streams for basketball teams, in addition to ticket sales. Sacramento's economy is struggling and its arena is outdated, he said. "It's a business decision and the economics of Anaheim are better t
The Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange ended 2010 with a bang as they capped off the year by recording the highest number of projects in the planroom on record. The Exchange began keeping statistics on planroom numbers in 1987 and has seen upticks and downticks in the number of projects received that have typically been commensurate with the local economy. Despite the continuance of the great recession through 2010 the Exchange recorded 3,436 projects in the year. That is 18% higher than the numbers recorded in 2009 and higher than any number on record since the Exchange began tracking these numbers in ‘87. “We attribute this large uptick in the number of projects for our members to t
The Effie Yeaw Nature Center, a 77-acre natural habitat preserve and learning center in Carmichael, faces possible closure. The preserve is making the transition from being run by Sacramento County to being run by nonprofit organization, the American River Natural History Association (ARNHA), which currently is the center's second largest contributor, behind the county. However, the state budget may not cover expenses for the transition period, which could take years, park employees say. If the center does not get the funding it needs while the ARNHA prepares to take total responsibility, it may have to close its doors indefinitely. Effie Yeaw was a kindergarten teacher who led explorat
Grrrrr.....just.....one.....more......inch....and....I've......got it! I thought the days of lying down to zip my jeans were over years ago. Ugh. An unexpected by-product of 13 months of unemployment has made it's presence known, unfortunately, in a really BIG way. At 11.6%. there are countless stories of unemployment in the big city; the pounding of the pavement; the plethora of interviews; hours of staring deeply into the 'eyes' of an lcd screen, peering at one job search engine after another. I'm here to touch on those, but to clue you in on a lesser known side-effect of the unemployment scene. Sacramento is a terrific place to live. Great weather, a booming arts scene, hip
I am not sure what the Mayor of Sacramento is doing on the legislative side of things. Nor am I sure what concrete plans he has to help the struggling business climate in "his" city and the surrounding region. What I do know, is that for the first 100 days or so the Mayor has spent the majority of his time in very media freindly meetings, round tables, summits and otherwise talking. He has also taken a couple trips back to Washington DC, with another soon on the horizon. His short tenure in office, has sure been interesting to watch, but at the same time a little worrisome to this observer. In a recent article, the Mayor commented on his celebrity relationships and the doors that ha
