It’s art coming together

It is fitting that during Earth Week, and a week before the Whole Earth Festival, the city of Davis will host the region’s largest professional art function that embraces earth —literally. That is earth of the ceramic variety. The John Natsoulas Art Gallery is hosting the 23rd annual California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA) in downtown Davis April 27-29. Pronounced “caca,” like the natural fertilizer that animals drop to the earth, the CCACA’s festivities will showcase ceramic art from three Los Rios District colleges, CSU Sacramento, UC Davis and more than 40 West Coast colleges, universities and high schools. Of the 5,000 who attend, 2,000 students will exhibit

Earth, Wind & Fire - Not Just a Hot Sacramento Night

After 40 years of performing together, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Earth, Wind & Fire (E,W&F) brought the 1970s’ back to life on Wednesday night at Thunder Valley Casino. Without skipping a beat, the energetic band delivered a crowd pleasing performance to approximately 4000 people at Thunder Valley’s new outdoor amphitheater. The stage, which is removable when concerts or outdoor events are not planned, offers Placer County another exceptional venue for star performances. Unlike their earlier days, E,W&F no longer bases their performances on over-the-top theatrics; instead, they have opted for a well choreographed light display, full background ensemble and audience attention to

Free SMUD trees support the 5 million tree campaign

Tree clean our air and water, store carbon in their trunks, create habitat for wildlife, reduce air pollution, increase property values, and provide countless other benefits. The Sacramento Tree Foundation works to leverage all of the benefits that trees provide to create healthy and sustainable communities through building the best urban forest in the Sacramento region. A major keystone in building the best urban forest is the Greenprint initiative, a multi-decade regional framework created to meet Sacramento's sustainability and livability goals by expanding urban forests and optimizing the benefits of tree canopies. Floods, bugs and oil spills made a great day at Capitol

Laughter, awe and high-pitched squeals of excitement made the 21st annual State Scientist Day seem more like a carnival than a day of teaching science lessons and experiments to more than 2,000 elementary school students.  However, education is exactly what was taking place.   The California Association of Professional Scientists (CAPS) sponsored the event on Thursday on the west steps of the Capitol. Third and sixth graders from about 30 elementary schools showed up to participate in hands-on science experiments teaching them about conservation, plants, oil spills and other earth-related and science lessons.   "This is our way of giving back to the community... especially now, schools a

Earth Day 2009: Christmas for the environment-not!

A couple of bromides to ponder: In the nineties I interviewed activist Darryl Cherney, who lives north of here.  During an interview with me he said he appreciated the awareness that Earth Day engenders, but with the orgy of green consumerism each year, the day is not "Christmas for the environment." We cannot buy ourselves into sustainability. Amen! Earth Day in Sacramento will be observed on Saturday, April 26th from 11-6 at Southside Park. Organizers describe the Event as featuring "Over one hundred booths/vendors, good real food, interactive activities for all ages, and amazing performances, including Northern California reggae artists Zion Roots." The free event is brought to yo
