Helping Disaster Survivors

Unfortunately, disasters are a constant on our planet. They are the 'nature of the beast';. Scenes of devastation create major feelings of shock, loss, fear, hopelessness, unfairness and anger in the people lucky to survive them. At that moment it feels like the worse thing that can happen just did. Besides property loss they may have lost a loved one - person or pet. Disasters impacting the largest numbers of people are usually inflicted by nature; earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, fire. Those caused by humans, generally smaller in scale, still trigger the same emotions. And, yes, some disasters are due to the influence of humans on nature. No matter, survivors' feelings rema

Red Cross Day at the Capitol

RED CROSS DAY AT THE CAPITOL In honor of March being Red Cross Month, representatives from the American Red Cross offered free workshops to Capitol workers on how to "Be Red Cross Ready". Disasters strike at any time and without warning - so it's important to learn how you can prepare your workplace or home for any disaster. Displays of various Red Cross services, including Pet First Aid, Wilderness Training and CPR and AED training were located on the west steps of the Capitol. Abigail Capano, a Red Cross volunteer, demonstrated how to perform CPR on a dog, using a stuffed toy animal.   In addition, several disaster response vehicles were parked along 10th Street and available to t

New CEO for Sacramento's Red Cross Chapter

Dawn Lindblom is the new CEO of the Sacramento-Sierra Chapter of the American Red Cross. According to Steve Turner, Sac-Sierra Chapter Board Chair, "Dawn is a perfect fit for this position, given her collaborative leadership style and track record. She came directly from her highly successful role as Regional Executive Director for the Inland Northwest Chapter in Spokane, WA". "Spokane is a regional chapter like Sacramento", Lindblom explains. She oversaw six district chapters spread out over 38,611 square miles, almost two-thirds of the state of WA. Much of the area is rural.
