One Scary Nite 3

After a slightly flawed but excellent nonetheless One Scary Nite 2, expectations were high for the third annual installment of the "Deon Taylor Enterprises presents: One Scary Nite" Halloween party, which went down at the California Auto Museum Thursday night. Familiar attractions returning this year included "Mad Scientist" Jack Sparx with his Tesla coil, huge propane fireballs and deranged laugh, stilt walkers, fire dancers, go-go dancers and many bloody, gory "staff monsters" and zombies who shuffled around the venue with a vacant look in their eyes, grunting at passing partygoers. Absent this year were the red carpet and arrivals, the national musical act (last year it was Bell Biv D

One Scary Night

It was December, 1991, I was an eighth grader and I had just received my winter grades. My parents had promised to buy me a CD for every A I earned, so I was especially thrilled to see four of them on my report card.                Four A’s. Four CDs. The first CDs I'd ever own. Read ’em and weep: Jesus Jones’ "Doubt," Nirvana’s "Nevermind," Boyz II Men’s, "Cooleyhighharmony" and Bell Biv Devoe’s "Poison."                I can't explain away the Jesus Jones decision. I wish I could blame it on the pot or the drinking, but the only pot that chubby 13-year-old me dabbled in was pies, and the only unhealthy drinking I was doing was that of strawberry milkshakes.                Nirvana and Boy

A helping hand from Danny Glover and Bobby Jackson

Danny Glover, Bobby Jackson, Mark S. Allen and Deon Taylor spent their Sunday spreading holiday cheer to families at the Country Club Plaza on Watt Avenue. They were among volunteers distributing holiday bags, complete with turkey and stuffing, to 500 single-parent families. Glover is familiar with Sacramento, having grown up in the Bay Area. The actor and activist said his parents always worked two jobs when he was growing up to provide for him and his brothers. "It feels good to hand out the meals," he said as he handed a turkey to another family. Glover has starred in over 40 movies. "More and more families are struggling, living off of credit, hoping for a period of prosperity. This

One Scary Nite

Fear has never been so funny. From the mind of producer Deon Taylor comes One Scary Nite. That's the biggest Halloween party Sacramento has ever seen, to be hosted by Flavor Flav and Mark S. Allen at the California Auto Museum at 2200 Front Street on Thursday. The star-studded event produced by Taylor, Sacramento Kings point guard Bobby Jackson and Roxanne Avent will include more than 200 zombies, a hearse display, costume contest, midnight money drop and nearly 1,000 guests. According to Karen McClaflin, executive director of the California Auto Museum, the venue is a perfect fit for what Taylor envisioned for the party and the hearse exhibit that opened Oct. 1 was a bonus. "This is s

Brief Interview: Deon Taylor

By Tony Sheppard Capitol Weekly The Judges judge and the waiting line waits! A little Hollywood-style excitement came to the Downtown Plaza on Saturday, April 4th. The event was an open casting call for the planned late night show “Up All Nite” from Deon Taylor Enterprises. Deon is a champion of local indie production, with a studio facility and multiple feature films and shows about to be released and productions that have remained in Sacramento despite the siren call of multiple, cumulative production incentives from other states and cities. I asked Deon a few questions in a quiet moment:   CW: Could you tell me a little about the concept behind “Up All Nite?” DT: Basically the conce
