The Occupy movement struggles to resonate within the black community

For the past few months cities across America have seen crowds of protestors taking to the streets angered by the state of the U.S. economy in the wake of noticeable corporate greed, Wall Street failures, and home lending corruption scandals to name a few gripes. In what has become known as the “Occupy Wall Street” or “OWS” movement, citizen discourse has largely become a protest of “We won’t take it anymore” politics, against the widening wealth divide and continued mistrust of a political system. A type of corporate-political combo agenda that has seemingly sold out main street Americans for the greater catered interest of the top one percent richest people. Now this does not on its surf

Masquerade gala at the Artisan

An exquisite celebration full of music, ballroom dance, costumes and a masquerade was enjoyed by many at the Artisan this past Saturday evening. The 2nd Annual Autumn Harvest Masquerade Ball also served to benefit Wind Youth Services. Masks and formal attire were required for the event. 18th century costumes were recommended and most guests stayed with the theme. Masks were available for purchase at the door. Inspired by Paris, high fashion and ballroom dancing, guests enjoyed a gala evening. A poker tournament, a raffle and prizes for best costumes were other highlights of the event organized by Susan Purdy and her husband Jamie. Appetizers and desserts were provided for guests. Win

From childhood drawings to international art shows

Sacramento artist Skinner said his interest in art began in preschool when he would try to draw Hulk Hogan’s muscles. The 32-year-old’s art – a far cry from drawings of Hulk Hogan and brontosauruses – has been shown across North America and Europe. His most recent international show was a 10-day event in Moscow two weeks ago. His work includes paintings, wall murals, toys, album covers and sculpture as well as music, which he said he picked up in high school – playing guitar and singing. Some of his work has been featured on snowboards, skateboards, snowboarding goggles and even a poster campaign for the Quentin Tarantino film “Inglorious Basterds” that ended up not being used. LAUNCH 2010 blasts off

The second annual LAUNCH showcase hit the Artisan Building Saturday for a night full of music, design, art and fashion. Artists and designers from Sacramento, Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco flocked to LAUNCH to show off their stuff, and the turnout looks even more promising for next year. Designers of clothes and jewelry hung out in the outside venue, presenting handcrafted jewelry, buttons and clothing. Most vendors had mainly vintage jewelry and clothes, some more unique than others. The outdoors also contained several booths from locals who handcraft jewelry and trinkets and sold vintage clothing, as well as live music. “Launch really seemed like a good vibe,” jewelry artist

Greens Hotel for sale

The Greens Hotel – an ecologically friendly boutique hotel in North Sacramento – was listed for sale on loopnet.com on the first week in May with an asking price of $1.4 million by owner Dan Friedlander. Friedlander said Monday he has received three "solid offers," but he's not sure if he will accept any of them, adding that he prefers to have the hotel managed by someone who will take it forward in the same vein. After about a decade in the works and a mere two years in operation, Friedlander – who is from Sacramento but lives in San Francisco – said being an absentee landowner visiting the site once every two or three weeks is just not working out. “I thought I could do it, but it jus

Music meets design at Vhcle Launch festival

Vhcle Magazine set the mood for their Launch Design and Music festival with a swanky location and a variety of tunes Saturday evening at the Greens Hotel on Del Paso Boulevard. The festival was a celebration of design and the arts, as well as a way for Vhcle to brand itself in the Sacramento community, according to Michael Hargis, an architectural designer and coordinator of the event. The Greens hotel is mother nature-meets-urban design. Hargis described the hotel as “1950s mid-century modern.” Upon entering the hotel, brown and green hues meet the eyes and lights hang from the ceiling. Walking through the bar and lounge area, it was possible to see local vendors set up shop. A door le

Deer lands through family truck windshield near downtown

Tony Pineea and his four sons got a big shock when a deer landed in their windshield. Tony Pineea was traveling North on Highway 160 out of downtown Sacramento Tuesday morning with his four sons when a deer emerged from the light rail area adjacent to the highway and jumped in front of their pickup truck at the Del Paso exit. The deer hit so hard in the windshield area that the windshield broke through and collapsed in. The driver only sustained very minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital. Per Pineea, his sons were seatbelted and uninjured. The deer did attempt to run off, however it was too severely injured. An on scene CHP officer had to euthanize the deer on site to end
