River Cats drop second straight game to Fresno

Before an announced sellout crowd of 14,014 — the first of this season — the River Cats came up short by a score of 4-2 in a Father’s Day matinee against the Fresno Grizzlies. Grizzlies starting pitcher Dan Runzler allowed two hits in four innings of work, but his four walks led to two runs for Sacramento. The Grizzlies used two relievers on the afternoon, with Josh Banks getting credit for the victory and Dan Otero collecting the save after the River Cats had the winning run at the plate in the ninth inning. Mark Ellis, who is on a rehab assignment for the Oakland Athletics, played in his second game and finished 0-3 with a walk. Ellis is scheduled to rejoin the A’s this week. Lenny D

Men walk a mile in high heels to support WEAVE

Men of all ages and shoe sizes gathered at the corner of 18th Street and Capitol Avenue, ready to walk one mile in women’s high heels to support WEAVE’s first “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event. “There are so many men that are affected by sexual assault, and this is a way for men to show their support,” said Amber Stott, WEAVE director of communications relations. Stott estimated that since Friday WEAVE has raised over $63, 000. Stott said all proceeds will go to WEAVE and benefit the various services that WEAVE provides, including counseling, WEAVE safe house, legal assistance, prevention programs and 24-hour support and response teams to help survivors of sexual assault. 'Welcome to Hell' tour at Ace of Spades

Music venue Ace of Spades hosted another sold-out show on Friday, the "Welcome to Hell Tour" featuring performances by metal/hardcore bands Whitechapel, Chelsea Grin, I Declare War, The Acacia Strain and Veil of Maya. I Declare War and Chelsea Grin started things off with lots of growling, screaming and calls for the crowd to get violent. The circle pits were large and constant the entire night, with sweaty, aggressive men running around in the open space formed in the middle of the crowd, using their flailing body parts to punch and kick whatever happened to be in front of them as hard as they could. It's the norm at these types of shows, but if you're there to enjoy the music it's an

Pinback at Harlow's on Dec 30

This Thursday you'll have a chance to end 2010 on a good note by catching indie-rock fave Pinback at Harlow's. The heart of the San Diego band has always been Zach Smith and Rob Crow, and with an upcoming album on the horizon and to stay fresh creatively, the duo is taking a different approach to performing on their current outing. As Smith explains: "We've decided to have some fun and present our songs in a new light. Instead of playing our songs the traditional way by having a backup band play all of our extra parts we thought it would be entertaining and fresh for just the two of us to play live. The idea is to present our music at times in a more broken down manner very similar sound

Filter: Welcome back to the fold

The extensive gear set up inside Harlow's Monday night foreshadowed a serious rock show taking place for the gathered crowd of 200.  Drum kit and amp stacks on the stage covered in black cloth, two extra soundboards at the back of the house and side-stage, multiple guitar road cases – this band was here for here for some in-your-face rock. In a performance promoting its new record “The Trouble with Angels,” Filter returned to the "Short Bus”-era formula that worked so well the first time around in the mid-’90s and gave fans the hard-charging riffs they expected to hear from the former alt-rock chart toppers. Taking the stage dressed as the Unabomber, the former Nine Inch Nails guitarist
