Thunder Valley Sets Off Dyno-mite!

I was heading out to the Super ’70s Soul Jam at Thunder Valley Casino and Resort Thursday night, so I donned my rose-colored glasses, bell bottoms and platform shoes. I packed snacks like Big Hunk, Bottle Caps and Screaming Yellow Zongers before leaving. I knew I would get the munchies since I’m such a burnout and can’t leave home without a joint or three (hey, I have a prescription). I was just hoping I could maintain with all that groovy music playing. The last thing I needed was for some narc to rat me out. As for the concert, it was far out, man, and, I should add, dyno-mite! Right on. I get it. Not everyone can be as hip as the hipsters from the ’70s, but last night at Thunder Valle

All Benefitted from Bennett

Taking the stage to a sold-out crowd and a standing ovation, Tony Bennett, dressed in a creamy-yellow blazer, black trousers and a multi-colored tie, opened his performance with “Watch What Happens.” Backed by an impeccable 4-piece ensemble, Tony sauntered across the Thunder Valley Casino and Resort stage with the grace and elegance of someone 20 years his junior. To state that Tony personifies class and excellence is an understatement. From the moment he walks onto the stage to the moment he waved goodnight he makd the audience the center piece of his performance. His ensemble is recognized throughout with kind gestures, a gentle touch or a duet. Tony owns the stage but makes sure that

Historic homes to open for tour

In 1900s Sacramento, the 2500 block of Q Street was a new middle-class neighborhood of railroad workers, pipe fitters and small business owners whose dreams of home ownership were largely made possible by the extension of the nearby streetcar route. Their homes were the example of early suburban living, and three of them on the historic Bungalow Row – as well as four other historic buildings – will be open as part of the 35th annual Sacramento Old City Association home tour from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sept. 19. In addition to the bungalows are several other homes – with the oldest being an 1889 Victorian – and a Winn Park oddity: an emergency relay station built in 1937 that served as a 24-hou

Resurrecting Classic Cinema In Downtown Roseville.√

If you live anywhere near the Roseville area then you know that not only this town, but this entire region shuts down around 7 o'clock. For year's your evening "hang out" choices consisted of A) Denny's, B) Mel's, C) the random bar or D) your own living room. Residents of this area seem to be forever relegated to driving all the way Downtown Sac for some type of nightlife that isn't the above mentioned choices. That is, until now. Recently, a ragtag group of people under the leadership of Hector Marquez (A local filmmaker native to Roseville) have decided to start screening classic films in Roseville's iconic Tower Theater (not to be confused with Downtown Sacramento's Tower Theater). Th

Classic Rock Lives! . . . in bed by 11.

Heart and Sammy Hagar. Between them they have sold nearly 100 million albums, not one of which was sold to me.    I knew Heart was from Seattle, and was famous for such hits as "Barracuda," and "that one song" and "you know that other song, the one, with the singer."   Hagar, "The Red Rocker," I knew from Van Halen, of course, but I have always been more of a Metallica guy. I can honestly say that I liked the Hagar incarnation of VH more than the David Lee Roth incarnation, but that isn't really saying much.    Sammy seems like he'd be a lot of fun to hang out with. Diamond Dave seems like he'd do all your drugs then leave with your girlfriend.    Heart and Sammy "co-headlined" a

A Christmas Story at the Crest

Downtown's Crest Theater will screen A Christmas Story, the retro comedy classic based on Jean Shepherd's novel, in the third annual Christmas Story at the Crest event Saturday, December 19.  Beginning at noon, guests will enjoy several tables of home-baked sweets and hot chocolate in the lobby of the gorgeous art deco theater, while awaiting their turn to meet a real-bearded Santa, available to take gift requests and photos with hopeful children and adults.  The film begins at 1 p.m.  Ten dollar tickets will benefit Jesuit High School. For the uniquely uninitiated, A Christmas Story is the campy cult classic about 1940's school kid, Ralphie Parker, who wants nothing more than for Santa t
