800 K Street Plan at Preservation Commission

This Wednesday, March 2, the City of Sacramento's Preservation Commission will review and comment on plans for the 800 block of K Street. This plan follows the February review and comment for the 700 block of K Street, (a project of D&S Development and CFY Development) by the Preservation Commission, later presented to Design and Planning Commission. City of Sacramento Preservation Commission Wednesday, March 2, 5:30 PM, City Council Chambers, New City Hall, 915 I Street, Sacramento Agenda for the Preservation Commission meeting can be found here: http://sacramento.granicus.com/AgendaViewer.php?view_id=21&event_id=144   This project, selected last summer as one of two projects for the

New faces on K Street

Three new façades add a bit of “wow” to K Street Mall. Work is close to wrapping up on San Francisco nightclub owner George Karpaty's new businesses, Dive Bar, District 30 and Pizza Rock. A month away from the expected openings, contractors applied some of the finishing touches to the exteriors Thursday. The bar, club and restaurant technically occupy one building, owned by Sacramento developer David Taylor and CIM. But the exteriors were rebuilt to look like three distinct, separate spaces – from sleek contemporary to slightly edgy to quaint, Old World charm. The façades are like book covers, designed to entice by giving just a taste of what's inside, said the project's architectural d

Marathon Runners

Thousands of runners ran the California International Marathon (CIM) from Folsom to the Capitol Steps this past Sunday. Canadian Dylan Wykes won the 28th CIM with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 39 seconds. Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 13 seconds. Along with the thousands of runners there were just as many individual stories of courage and determination. There were runners representing various running teams from California and from all over the world. There were also teams representing Men, Women and Coed teams as well as Corporate, Family, Health Club, High School, Military, Open, Police/Fire and Running C

Mermaid bar to open late 2010

Sacramentans will have to wait just a little longer to watch pizza makers tossing dough and mermaids swimming over bartenders' heads downtown. The opening of a trio of new K Street establishments – Dive Bar, Pizza Rock and District 30 – has been postponed from this month to late this year. The delay has come from “surprises” that cropped up while building a structurally sound vault under the sidewalk, said San Francisco nightclub operator George Karpaty. "Nobody's really late. It's just the way construction goes," he said. "Big projects run into delays. They've done an outstanding job dealing with all the surprises." The vault will hold three electrical transformers to power the buildi

Running the 2009 CIM

Spiderman, Elvis, a ninja and a man dressed as a princess were just some of the dressed-up supporters I saw as I tried to stay warm in the 28-degree weather before starting in the 27th annual California International Marathon alongside six thousand-plus other runners.  Some were there to support their favorite charity, some to support a friend or family member. But all were there to complete the arduous task of running or walking 26.2 miles. According to official results, 5,845 of more than 6,000 race participants finished the marathon. Unlike runner Tim Twietmeyer, who completed his 27th consecutive CIM on Sunday, I was running my first marathon, hoping to finish in less than four hours

CIM draws record participants

The forecast calls for lows in the 30s Sunday morning, but chilly temperatures won't stop more than 11,000 runners from going the 26.2-mile distance from Folsom Lake to the Capitol. The 27th running of the California International Marathon will have a record field of 7,500 runners from the 50 states and 20 countries. In conjunction with the marathon, 4,000 runners will participate in the Marathon Relay Challenge and 3,000 children will participate in the Kaiser Permanente maraFUNrun. "We sold out five and a half weeks early, even though we added another 1,000 to last year's total," said Lucy Eidam, president of the CIM board of directors, in a press release. "People are looking for an ou

Marathon road closures on Sunday

The 26.2 mile course of Sunday's California International Marathon ends at the Capitol, which means that most of it takes place outside of the downtown/Midtown Grid. But if you're planning on being out and about on Sunday morning, beware that a number of streets will be closed in the usually-quiet central city.  Particularly between about 8 a.m. and noon, Grid streets will be problematic. If you live in the Grid, walk or bike. With approximately 14,000 runners expected to participate, the area around the Capitol is likely to be crawling with cars and pedestrians. Organizers just released the mile-by-mile lowdown on road closures, by intersection. Here are the closures that will effect th

Making a Difference One Stride At A Time

The Vision Throughout my life I have made good decisions and some challenging. Some decisions created great success and others assisted in my journey of developing the character that I have today. I firmly believe in the mission and services the Elk Grove Food Bank offers, as I personally have benefited from community based services (9) years ago, during “my time” of challenge. Since that time, I have completed college, bought a home, married a wonderful and supportive woman and furthered my passion of running to reach new challenges and hurdles for my life long journey. Through the development of ultra marathons in my life, I have taken this ability a step further, by incorporating ex
