Sacramento radio legend Tony Cox, who entertained thousands of people in the seventies, eighties and nineties, reveals his meeting with Paul McCartney in a newly produced SacTV.com video. Featured as part of SacTV's local radio history series, our interview took place in April 2000 and the footage finally has been released to the public. Cox worked on air at KROY in the 70s and 80s then KSFM in the 90s. He met Paul McCartney while he programmed Los Angeles radio in 1975. The subject about McCartney came up while we were discussing the nature of audience perception, how two different people may perceive the same radio broadcast differently. Cox says he met McCartney through one of his week

The California Museum Hosts Star-Studded Event

Limos filled with celebrities lined J Street for the 2011 California Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony at the Memorial Auditorium Thursday. The first ceremony in Sacramento was in 2006. The prestigious event was established by former California first lady Maria Shriver. The event was created to honor legendary people in California who encapsulate California’s “innovative” spirit. Many of the inductees were no stranger to the limelight. Rob Lowe, Lucy Liu and previous inductee Clint Eastwood, among others, graced the red carpet this year. The crowd cheered for the diverse group of inductees as they made their way down the red carpet. The 2011 inductees were astronaut Buzz Aldrin, The Beach Bo

Athletes > Cancer

Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri

Activists, Vegetarians Descend on Downtown Sacramento for Film Premiere

Let’s face it:  Sacramento is rarely visited by celebrities.  But on Wednesday night, actor Martin Sheen visited the Crest Theatre to help State Senator Dean Florez welcome about 200 guests to a screening of the new documentary film Food, Inc.  Sheen does not appear in the film, but he clearly shares a passion with Sen. Florez for fixing our broken food system. Food, Inc. offers a critical look at the way America grows, distributes and eats its meals.  A food system dominated by a few mega-corporations and unevenly regulated by the government is making us sick.  This system has wrought havoc on the environment, and many farmers, ranchers, and laborers are trapped in a hopeless spiral of d

The PUNCH!

I just remembered a very fond memory... Now, as I was gathering information to write this, I realize that many people won't find it entertaining or hilarious and they will think I'm mean for thinking it's so funny, but seriously... think about the situation and the level of CRAZY with this dude and just appreciate it for that. Back in 2002 a legend was being created.  A man by the name of Richard Jiron was beginning to carve his name into history and Sacramento folklore.  Richard was not a rich man, nor was he a powerful man. Ney, he was a crazy man. Richard was a man who said he resented watching the good life pass him by.  Now, in today's consumer driven society, where so much emphasis

A brush with death.

Yesterday it rained in Sacramento. Yesterday I didn’t pay close enough attention to the weather forecast in Sacramento. Rather than parking near my office, I decided to park about a mile or so away and ride my skateboard in to work. It’s fun and gets me a little exercise. The ride in to work was quite pleasant. The ride back to my truck wasn’t so much, and the rain was not the worst part. I left my office around 5 PM, at which point a steady rain was falling. Skateboarding in the rain sucks. Getting wet sucks, having your wheels get super slippery sucks. That would’ve been plenty to spoil what’s usually an enjoyable ride. Not only did I have to endure getting soaked and trying not to fall
