Hundreds of vintage, power and one-of- a-kind cars were exhibited and competed for awards. Motorcycles were also part of the event participating in 3 poker runs.

Where do you go when you want to buy or shop for a car? A car dealership obviously. But that’s the point, you GO to the dealership. That’s not necessary anymore. Planet Automotive Group in partnership with Hyundai have opened a new type of store, a car store, THE car store. The Hyundai Store.
The only store of it’s kind in North America, not even the Mall of America with its roller coaster and such has a store where you can walk in, test drive and purchase a car. They will even accept a trade-in if you got one.
Starting Monday, Nov. 22, the Hyundai Store is officially open for business in the Westfield Downtown Plaza. Employees were still polishing up the store as the days first customers came through the doors. Located on the lower level, next to Forever 21, you will find this wide open showroom with all 11 of the available models in the Hyundai lineup. “Our thinking was why not bring the store to where the people are,” says Chris Schaffer, a partner in Planet Automotive Group. “We want people to think seriously about Hyundai when they are considering a new car.”
Tim Langston, Store Director of the new Hyundai Store, loves the idea. “I got out of the car selling business 15 years ago because I didn’t like the process of selling somebody a car.” This store is different, and it’s what brought him back.
It’s not unusual to see cars inside of a mall, but for the most part they are placed there as an advertisement. The Westfield Galleria at Roseville has cars placed in different locations throughout the mall, but there is no salesperson to answer any questions.
Southern California has a Lamborghini store, also owned by Planet Automotive Group, but it is primarily a clothing store, with some other small merchandise. Yes, there is a Lamborghini in the store and technically you could walk in and buy it, but that hasn’t happened yet.
“Our employees don’t work on commission. They are here to answer any questions that a shopper might have,” says Langston. “Hyundai has made a lot of improvements over the years and we want people to see that.”

The Sacramento International Auto Show kicked off its three-day run at Cal Expo on Friday with tons of vehicles from the past, present and future. With exhibits spread across the entire fairgrounds, there was something for car enthusiasts of all ages.

All of the major manufacturers at the show were featuring some or all of their 2011 models, and visitors were free to sit inside many of the cars to get a feel for what’s to come.

Among the exhibits looking back to the past, the Expo Center featured antique motorcycles such as a 1912 Excelsior and a 1914 Harley-Davidson.

There was also an exhibit of pre-1916 cars, including a 1908 Reo Runabout and a 1915 Ford Model T.

Ford’s main exhibit area featured a glimpse into the future where the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 was on display.

The pavilion that houses livestock during the California State Fair was cleaned up and sparkling with vehicles from Hyundai, Nissan and General Motors, who also appeared to have the largest display of vehicles with its makeup of Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac.

The centerpiece of Chevrolet’s exhibit was the car known as Sideswipe, one of the Autobots in the blockbuster movie “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

The environment continues to be a major focus for automakers as Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Toyota each featured a hybrid.

Shortly after the auto show opened Friday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave a brief talk on alternative-fuel vehicles and praised the manufacturers for having their hybrids on display.

Schwarzenegger commented on the growth of alternative-fuel vehicles, noting there were just two when he first took office in 2003, and that there will be 50 at an upcoming car show in Los Angeles.

“Even when I am finished with this job being governor, I just want you to know I will stay involved in this very important issue” Schwarzenegger said while talking about working with Congress to create an energy policy for the United States.

This year’s show featured three driving courses that allowed guests to test drive 2011 cars from Toyota, Ford and General Motors. Drivers were encouraged to accelerate from the starting line, slam on the brake and maneuver over makeshift potholes or bumps to experience the improvements in the new line of vehicles.
The California Automobile Museum is proud to announce that Ferrari of San Francisco will be the title sponsor of its newest exhibit, Automobilia! Celebrating Italian Automotive Design.

"I thought this Automobilia! exhibit was the perfect fit for the area and an exciting opportunity to support the Ferrari brand by our presence in the community that has shown its love for Italian motor cars," said Greg Minor, general manager of Ferrari of San Francisco, who noted the growing number of Ferrari owners in the Sacramento area. The project is the most ambitious ever undertaken by the California Automobile Museum and the sponsorship by Ferrari of San Francisco marks the Museum's first support for a large exhibit from the Bay area.

Automobilia! Celebrating Italian Automotive Design opens November 13, 2010 and adds an international flair to the Museum's current exhibits by showcasing some of the auto industry's most exotic cars and men who have become legends for creating them. The project includes construction of a piazza-style exhibit complete with murals that reflect Italian art and architecture to showcase the cars. Featured marques in this long-term exhibition include Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa. The exhibit will also give viewers a glimpse into the lives of men whose names have become synonymous with their cars, such as Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini, and others such as De Tomaso, Pininfarina, Bertone and Bizzarrini, whose creativity and passion for performance made these cars among the most elite in the world for their speed, handling and styling.

"With Automobilia! we want to do more than simply display beautiful cars," explains Karen McClaflin, Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum. "We want people to see the Italian culture that influenced the creation of these cars and for them to get to know the men whose styling and engineering are reflected in them, in much the same way that people want to know more about the artist when they admire a painting or a piece of sculpture," added McClaflin. "We think the exhibit will be a unique experience for everyone."

A wide variety of cars and special events are planned throughout the run of Automobilia!. The cars expected in the piazza on opening day include:

• a Ferrari 275 and Ferrari Testarosa
Sacramento residents will get a chance to comment on the city's plan to reintroduce cars to K Street Mall at a community meeting on the issue Thursday evening.

The meeting is one of the last opportunities for people to give feedback on the design concept, which is not yet complete. The Sacramento City Council previously approved a $2.7 million construction and design project allowing cars back on K Street from Eighth to 12th streets.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the historic City Hall, 915 I St.

The public's input is being sought before the City Council's Nov. 4 meeting. The council will be asked to approve an environmental study and allow the final design work to be undertaken, said the city's Economic Development Department spokesman Maurice Chaney.

The City Council voted in November 2009 to allow bikes back onto K Street. The change took effect Dec. 24, 2009.

K Street Mall was closed to cars in the 1960s. The city's goal is to allow cars back on K Street by late 2011.

Auto aficionados gathered at the Serrano Visitor Center early Sunday Morning to show off their vintage vehicles or enjoy admiring the many British models. Vendors and sponsors occupied various stations throughout the area. Food and drinks were also sold at other stations. One of my favorite areas was the cognac and cigar area. Hennessy provided the cognac and Briar Patch Smokeshop provided the cigars. This outdoor lounge provided a place to sit and relax.

Some people brought lawn chairs to enjoy the show while others brought a picnic. The lake area provided a nice view and was also used by children to play around. The gazebo next to the lake was used by the emcee and was the central gathering spot for a fashion show and presenting awards to winning vehicle owners.

Proceeds from the event went to the Concours Foundation which is a non-profit corporation. The Foundation provides education, resources, grants, and funding to youth in the areas of safe and sober driving practices. The organization hopes to foster interest in automobile safety and education.

The 7th Annual Niello Concours at Serrano also included a fashion show at noon. The fashion show was presented by Crush of Fountains at Roseville. Their boutique specializes in fashion trends, accessories, and gifts at reasonable prices. Some of the outfits modeled did not seem like they would break the bank.

A one of 16 built Cobra was displayed as was a 1962 Cooper Monaco Sports Racer. Other vehicles included some Exotics and Vintage Race Cars, many classics, muscle, and sports cars. During the event an auto judging contest was also held and winners were selected who were later announced in various categories.

Some of the more memorable vehicles included a 1935 Duesenberg owned by William Randolf Hearst. A personal classic favorite was a 1937 Packard. Award winners paraded down a driveway to the gazebo to receive their prices and pose for pictures.

There was also another group who walked the grounds and was escorted by Liz Miller. Miss El Dorado County (Sarah) and her court (Rebecca), Miss Teen El Dorado County (Raenen) and her court (Shana) walked the grounds. They posed for pictures with the fashion models and with some of the vehicles being showcased. An annual Miss El Dorado scholarship is offered to the winners of this event and is a good life experience for these young ladies. They mingled with other guests and looked like they were enjoying the experience.

This was a well attended event and the planning that took place was evident. Many sponsors from last year returned for this year’s event. Sponsors and vendors are expected to grow in the next few years as well.

For the past several weeks Sacramento has hosted many cultural events. This weekend the Veterans of Foreign Wars honored their comrades in a Carmichael Ceremony. The small hall was full and people were standing outside listening to the ceremony. Outside the veteran's hall a 21 gun salute honored the veterans and as if on cue a stealth fighter jet flew overhead as the ceremony continued.

Up the road in Roseville the 21st Annual Polish Festival was taking place on Main Street. The festival was sponsored by the Polish American Club of Sacramento. Vendors were on hand to sell merchandise and some delicious food. Polish and American beer was being sold. It was a little too early for me so I bypassed the beer.

A stage was set up for various dance and musical groups. There was another stage for dancing and eating. A musical trio played music for the audience to dance to traditional Polish music. Most people were dancing or eating. My favorite, potato pancakes were being sold, and we had a couple of servings. We also enjoyed some golabki and pierogi, as well as some homemade Polish pastries.

The Lowiczanie and Rozanie Folk Dance Groups were on hand for outdoor entertainment. Several hundred people were on hand to enjoy the festivities, food and each other’s company.

Over in Midtown, Hot Italian together with the Center of Contemporary Art Sacramento sponsored an 80th year Pininfarina celebration. Several Ferraris were on display at the Fremont Park site and just outside Hot Italian. Adam Saake, man about town, was on had to greet visitors.

The ears are greeted with that uniquely distinctive note of the finely tuned exhaust system, you can tell even from a distance with your eyes closed “That’s a Ferrari coming”. The clean fluid body lines inspired by the racing legends, it just screams high performance. That’s a Ferrari.

It was a rare opportunity to view some 15 of the finest examples of the famed Italian sports car which were on hand for the special preview event at the California Auto Museum in Sacramento. The event, which ran from 11am to 2pm was a kickoff celebration for the upcoming Automobilia “Celebrating Italian Automotive Design” car exhibit which will be at the museum opening November 13th, 2010. The exhibit, sponsored by Ferrari of San Francisco, featured the unveiling of the plan for the event which will be staged inside the museum. A special display from the Ferrari Club of North America helped round out the décor.

The exhibit will feature vehicles with “Italian Pedigree”. Various cars from private owners and collections are being rotated in and out of the exhibit for variety. Approximately 15 cars will be on display at any given time.

After some photo opportunities provided by MaverickPhotography.us, the drivers separated out of the crowd to their vehicles in anticipation of the upcoming cruise through the streets of Sacramento. The engines lit up to the delight of onlookers. A 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS and a 246 GTS Dino, which were on display in the museum, fired up their engines and headed out to join the caravan followed closely by a race prepped Ducati, a fine example of Italian performance on two wheels. A lonely vintage Vespa scooter was left to watch over the empty space.

People in attendance gathered outside to listen to the variety of wonderful sounds as the cars exited the parking lot and proceeded to get up to speed down Front Street. Their destination was Hot Italian Restaurant at 16th and Q, to continue the festivities.

The mission of the California Automobile Museum is to educate and entertain while preserving and promoting the automobile and its influence on our lives. The Museum is open daily from 10am - 6pm (last admission 5pm) and every 3rd Thursday until 9pm

Fans of hot rods and car customization crowded into Time Tested Books on 21st Street Sunday night to hear from a legend in the Sacramento car customization scene.

Dick Bertolucci, 82, had more than 100 fans eating out of his hand as he and his longtime friend Bud Ohanesian recounted tales from their pasts, all the while grinning like children who have just gotten away with something naughty.

As part of a series hosted by Time Tested Books, Bertolucci was this month’s guest in “The Sacramento Living Library,” a series that chooses its guests for their unparalleled knowledge in a particular field.

As historian and auto enthusiast Bruce Woodward sat beside Bertolucci and Ohanesian, it became clear that he wouldn’t need to do much to spur the two old-timers’ memories as they laughed and joked with the audience, reliving their glory days.

From tinkering with model airplanes as a boy to running his own successful auto-body shop in East Sacramento, Bertolucci told stories of drag racing his friends down the streets of Sacramento, a honeymoon spent touring various body shops around Los Angeles, and more than one encounter with the police.

Recalling his first car, a ’33 Chevy Roadster his father bought for him for $150, Bertolucci remembers getting it home only to have his father tell him they had to take off the front end.

“Why?” 14-year-old Bertolucci asked in horror. He had just gotten his first car and didn’t understand why he had to take it apart.

“These motors are no good,” Bertolucci’s father said. “I’ve got a ’41 high-torque truck engine we can put in there.”

Bertolucci said his father wouldn’t let him do mechanical work, so he had to do body work. His father showed him how to take a dent out of a fender. That was it for Bertolucci – he said he hasn’t looked back since.

As a teenager, Bertolucci raced up and down the streets of Sacramento. Late one night, an out-of-towner tracked down 16-year-old Bertolucci and challenged him to a race. Initially hesitant, he eventually gave in and accepted.

They decided to start the race on 16th and K streets and end at the railroad tracks a few blocks down. Bertolucci was worried about getting caught racing, so he gave his opponent a head-start. They screamed down the empty street until Bertolucci caught up. Racing neck and neck, they were nearing the finish line when he said he heard a sound.

“Ding, ding, ding...” Bertolucci said, eyebrows raised. “The train was coming.”

Bertolucci slammed on his brakes and came to a stop just feet before the tracks. His opponent, however, was unable to stop in time and the side of his car was pounded by the incoming train.

Bertolucci was so scared, he said, he just got out of there as fast as he could. He read the next day in the newspaper that the boy had only broken his arm, and there was no mention of racing.

“I think I used two of my nine lives on that one,” Bertolucci said.

At several points in the evening, the meeting between the old master and his fans took on the feeling of a family sitting together sharing stories. The man telling the stories just happened to be one of the founding fathers of the California custom car scene – a big deal to that audience.

“Remember that, Bud?” Bertolucci said to his friend several times throughout the night, chuckling about some good fortune he had or a time he had narrowly escaped some peril unscathed.

“Maybe the man upstairs is on my side,” he said quietly.

The newest exhibit at the California Automobile Museum (CAM) will highlight the success of Toyota, Japan’s largest car manufacturer, as a trendsetter in America since the days it sold the gas-sipping Toyopet on Hollywood Boulevard when the newest models in Southern California dealerships had massive tail fins.

The summer long exhibit, TOYOTA: Oh What A History!, sponsored by Elk Grove Toyota, opens on July 17 and will run through September 19. “Toyota was the first car manufacturer from the “Land of the Rising Sun” to sell cars in the United States and to challenge Detroit on many levels,” noted Karen McClaflin, Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum. “Over the last half century the company has left its mark as an industry leader, producing cars that were long on reliability and low on pollution. Its cars have also been high on the speed charts in every form of racing, from the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR to exotic prototype sports cars and trucks in the desert.”

TOYOTA: Oh What A History! will showcase cars from Toyota’s early years to some of their current raciest machines from the track. The vehicles on exhibit offer something for environmentalists, racing fans and automotive historians alike. Among the vehicles in the exhibit:

A 1959 Toyopet Crown sedan, a gas-sipping, economical model that introduced American buyers to Toyota when all gas was still leaded and under $0.25 a gallon

A 1967 2000 GT; a long-nosed sleek coupe that began Toyota’s road racing history in the U.S., pre-dating the popular Nissan/Datsun “Z” cars

A 1998/99 Mark III GTP prototype sports car; powered by Toyota during that car’s domination of IMSA road racing, a series that featured one-of-a-kind machines with almost no technical limits on design

A gas/electric hybrid Prius that set a Land Speed Record over 200 mph for its class on the salt flats of Bonneville, showing that environmental responsibility and speed can be packaged in one car

An off-road race truck, typical of the machines that have won dozens of major races for Toyota Motorsports, such as the Baja 1000, sanctioned by SCORE

The TOYOTA: Oh What A History! exhibit will have an exhibition sneak peak and panel discussion on Friday, July 16 from 6pm – 9pm with guests from Toyota Motorsports, including Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, winner of numerous races and championships in the SCORE off-road series, and Scooter Patrick, a veteran road racer who piloted the GTP machine to victories in the IMSA series. The evening will also include a no host bar and light appetizers. This event is free for CAM Gearhead Members and $15 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

On Saturday, July 17th the exhibit will officially open to the public. From 11am – 1pm, visitors can get autographs from Ivan “Ironman” Stewart and Scooter Patrick and from 11am – 3pm can test drive 2011 Toyotas, courtesy of Elk Grove Toyota. This event is free for CAM Gearhead Members and included with paid Museum admission for the general public.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience first-hand Toyota’s undeniable mark on the world’s auto industry with its attention to detail, innovative technology and a commitment to designing and building the world’s most popular cars.

Now that city leaders have dedicated $2.7 million in funding to add cars to the K Street pedestrian mall, what exactly does the city hope to achieve from the effort?

Mayor Kevin Johnson and city staffers have said that the move to include cars on K Street would be a boon for business and would also make the street safer.

Johnson said at a Monday press conference that automobile traffic on K Street — banned since the late 1960s — would create numerous advantages for the city. “It increases visibility for all the retail...stimulates our activity in terms of K Street, and pedestrian malls are a thing of the past,” he said, adding that the cars would also improve public safety on the thoroughfare.

The city plans to make the area bordering Eighth and 12th streets on K Street ready for cars by mid-to-late 2011, said Denise Malvetti, a senior project manager for the city’s Economic Development Department. The estimated $2.7 million construction and design budget for the project comes from local transportation funds for economic development projects, she said.

Funds for the project do not come from the city’s general fund, an April 27 report from the city’s Economic Development and Transportation Departments noted.

The construction part of the project’s budget includes funding for new stop lights and for reprogramming existing stop lights, Malvetti said.

In making their argument for adding cars to K Street, city staffers are citing the work of Downtown Works, a consulting group that wrote a report on downtown issues for the city and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.

“Downtown Works strongly recommends the city of Sacramento follow the direction of dozens of other U.S. cities and re-open K Street to vehicular traffic which will both aid in the reconnection of the grid and enhance the retail viability,” the April 27 staff report states.

Eugene, Chicago and Louisville are some of the cities that have reversed course to add cars to their pedestrian malls, according to the report.

Councilman Steve Cohn said he backed the idea of including cars on K Street, but he raised concerns about an $800,000 portion of the budget that would have otherwise been spent on streets in his district.

Cohn’s concern translated into the following City Council decision: During the city’s budget process, the city will re-examine the project’s funding sources.

Transforming K Street into a pedestrian mall was “a mistake from the beginning,” Cohn said.

Also on Tuesday, K Street business leaders and local organizations that promote economic development spoke in favor of letting people drive their cars on K Street. These supporters included developer David Taylor; Kevin Greene, policy manager for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership; Mike Testa, vice president of communications and public affairs for the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau; Richard Lewis, executive producer of California Musical Theatre; and Sid Garcia-Heberger, operator of the Crest Theatre.

Greene said that cars on the street would boost public safety and be “a key step toward a greater retail viability.”

Downtown resident John Deeter was the lone speaker at the meeting who opposed the idea. He called K Street “a refuge” from cars.

The California Automobile Museum’s newest exhibit features cars that were created in California but have been celebrated in movies, songs and popular culture across the country and around the world for a half-century.

The exhibit, Drive Fast, Take Chances: Birth of the Hot Rod is sponsored by So-Cal Speed Shop, Sacramento and runs now through July 5. It explores the hot rod culture that grew out of the dry lake beds of California in the post-World War II years and ultimately spread to drag strips and back roads, as well as burger drive-ins and street cruises, such as the annual car cruise hosted by the California Automobile Museum which will commence on the streets of Downtown Sacramento on July 31st.

“By definition, every hot rod is a unique expression of style or the owner’s desire for speed,” said Karen McClaflin, Executive Director of the California Automobile Museum. “But collectively, hot rods represent a common language of individuality and adventure that brings out a bit of rebel or free spirit in each of us.”

The idea of hot rods started in the early 1920s and ‘30s, as racers looking for more speed modified and hopped up Henry Ford’s Model Ts and As to find extra horsepower. But the phenomenon exploded after World War II as servicemen returned home and applied what they had learned about mechanics and technology in the military to the cars they were driving.

After the deprivation and hardship of the war years, hot rods were a way of expressing the pent-up demand for adventure and daring, and a way for racers to earn bragging rights for those who could push technology and speed to the limit.

The powerful V-8 engines of Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler provided more horsepower than the more primitive four-banger engines of the past. The popularity of hot rods created a new, California-centered industry as manufacturers, many of which continue to thrive on world-wide sales today, made crankshafts, pistons, cylinder heads and add-on parts to boost power and speed to record levels.

The first stages on which to push these speed machines to their limit were the dry lake bedsbeds of Southern California, where unofficial “timing contests” were as disorganized as an Oklahoma land rush and twice as dangerous. That same daring was carried out on back roads all over America as the hot rod culture spread from coast to coast.

One of the most prominent cars on exhibit is the legendary "Old Crow" belly tank racer owned by Bobby Green. "Belly tanks" were one of the first examples of a new style of speedster built from army surplus that used aircraft fuel tanks for bodies to take advantage of their minimal wind resistance for maximum speed. "Old Crow" has attracted attention on a number of fronts having been featured in a Discovery Channel feature on Bonneville racers; being on display in locations as far away as Amsterdam; and being prominently displayed in a recent Tommy Hilfiger advertisement. The exhibit also includes examples of the style known as “highboys,” which mount narrower ’28 and ’29 bodies for streamlining on a wider ‘32 Ford frame, which provided more stability at high speed and more room for a V-8 engine, as well as for superchargers and other add-on high performance parts.

Also on exhibit, ’32 Ford “Deuce Coupes,” still the most popular model among hot rodders, each with a slightly different style illustrating the evolution of speed technology.

For enthusiasts interested in an up-close and detailed “how to” look at hot rod construction, the exhibit will also include a partially disassembled ’34 Ford to show off the modifications that are more than skin deep.

The 1941 Bantam Reconnaissance Car (Jeep), 1943 Ford Military Jeep, and 1943 Willys Military Jeep are great examples of American innovation during the war years that are rarely seen together.

In July 1940, the U.S. Army issued a challenge to the nation’s automakers to produce a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle described as a “quarter-ton, 4X4 truck.” Ford, Willys-Overland, and American-Bantam took on the task but only American-Bantam was able to produce a prototype in the short amount of time the military required. However, Bantam’s limited production capacity made it impossible for them to produce the number of vehicles the Army needed. The government shared the design with Ford and Willys-Overland and all three companies produced what would become known as the “Jeep.” These Jeeps became the primary vehicle of the U.S. Army and Allies during World War II and the postwar period.

These Jeeps won’t be in one place for long. The 1941 Bantam Reconnaissance Car is part of this month’s Car Club Cavalcade featuring American-Bantams and is on display until April 30, 2010. The 1943 Willys Military Jeep is part of the newest exhibit, Drive Fast, Take Chances: Birth of the Hot Rod and is on display until July 5, 2010.
The rods, which rolled in Wednesday for registration and early judging, still can be viewed Sunday, the last chance to catch the three-day show. This year's theme, Mardi Gras, lends a special flavor to the event with decoration and awards for cars that best depict the theme.

The anniversary makes this a special year for event producer John Buck. Pictures of show winners all the way back to the first Autorama in 1950 are on display.

The Capital Auto Club, known as "the Thunderbolts," started the show as a friendly competition to see who had the hottest of the hot rods. The carscould win several awards and a tradition was born.

Every year since 1950, attendance has grown.

"In customization, this is where the people are," said Jim Matus, owner of Jim's Chevy Parts in Rancho Cordova. This is Matus' sixth year as a vendor at Autorama. "We do a number of shows every year and this is by far the best audience."

Buck said he believes that family values are the backbone of Autorama. Discount family packages are available, with Hot Wheels toys for the kids. The music and entertainment at the show is always family friendly. "Even the pin-up show is focused on the fashion and not the skin," Buck said.

Buck said Autorama's main sponsors -- Kragen O'Reilly, Les Schwab Tire Centers and Sacramento Vintage Ford -- emphasize family values.

The smell of rubber and motor oil fill the vast warehouse stuffed with cars, trucks and motorcycles. The battle between man and machine reaches its pinnacle under the I-5 freeway in downtown Sacramento. The California Automobile Museum, 2200 Front St., is featuring the Born to Ride exhibit through March 12.
The exhibit is chronological, following motorcycles from their humble beginnings at the turn of the 20th century to the current world speed record holder. This impressive machine, BUB 7, reached 367.382 mph in September at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Bikes of all brands, spanning several countries and countless models, are on display.
There's a 1912 Harley Davidson, once owned by Steve McQueen, and a 1942 Crocker. The Crocker is considered the rarest motorcycle on display. Fewer than 100 were produced in the months leading to the United States' involvement in WWII. They are valued for their quality and rarity.
Jeff Hughes and Albert Miranda love motorcycles. They rode their BMW bikes from Modesto in the fog for the opening day of the exhibit.
"I've been riding since I was a kid," said Hughes. "I actually got my motorcycle license before I got my car drivers license. I saw a lot of bikes inside that were amazing."
"My favorite bike was the Ariel Mark II," Miranda said. "The square four design (of the engine) was revolutionary."
Special events are planned throughout the exhibit in corroboration with Elk Grove Power Sports. On January 9, Flying Motorcycles' chief executive officer, Sam Bousefield, will be on hand for a meet and greet and demonstration. Also that day, Elk Grove Power Sports will offer demo rides (weather permitting).
Machine mayhem doesn't end with motorcycles, though. Admission to the Born to Ride exhibit includes entry to the museum. Row after row boasts Fords, Chevrolets, Studebakers, Hudsons and more. Original Model A and T cars are on display, too.
"Our collection is very impressive," Museum curator Amanda Moss.
"We offer visitors an experience into the world of automobiles," she said. "We have an extensive exhibit on the 'green' aspect of automobiles from the EV1 to the 2009 Tesla."

"Wildly Successful!" said Stacey Castle, president of Castle Communications and producer for the international show, when I spoke with her moments after the gates closed, in response to what may have been the most successful auto shows in Sacramento history. The weekend-long Sacramento International Automotive Show had something to offer for every level of car enthusiast.

With the auto market climate as it is, the changing economy and a need for good family entertainment, the event's coordinator, Castle Communications set out to make great strides with this year's Sacramento International Automotive Show in spite of odds that seemed to be stacked against them. Though numbers are not yet available, Stacey, indicated that the event was a huge success and far exceeded their expectations. See previous article by Kassandra Perlongo.

With more than 30 manufacturers and cars from vintage to tomorrow, Cal Expo was transformed into one enormous automotive showroom. Said to be second only to the state fair, cars and displays could be found in nearly every nook and cranny of the exposition park. If that’s not enough, goers were able to take their turn behind the wheel on one of three test tracks on the grounds. Wheels screeched and engines roared as attendees slid into the seat of the all new Camaro, while others tried out the new Corvette. Ford brought its line of hybrids to its track and successfully displayed that hybrids do have pep.

Castle rolled out the red carpet for all of its guests. From building to building, all goers had to do was follow the red carpet to the next exhibit hall. If they wanted to hop around, everywhere they turned were large "you are here" signs with a venue directory to easily navigate their way.

For those in the market for a vintage automobile, Castle had that covered as well with the "Classic Car & Rod Sale". One building was filled with some of the finest classics ready for one to sign the line and take home. From horseless carriages, to vintage VW Bugs, Super Sports, Mustangs and more all in cherry condition and ripe for the pick'in for the person with the right price.

Be it RV's, motorcycles, vintage Porsches, small and economical, large and rugged, it was all there. Castle made sure food vendors with reasonable pricing were on site, along with musical entertainment, kids play areas and more to make sure the event catered well to the whole family.

In the final hours Sunday evening, there was still energy and excitement in the air. Now with over 25 years of successful international auto show events under its belt, Sacramento is one of the major venues in the United States for this type of auto show. On their web site, Sac Auto Show states "many of the large manufacturers' displays have been under construction since early this year. The making of auto shows is big business. From the granddaddy of all the American shows, The Detroit Auto Show, to auto shows in much smaller markets – the preparation for putting all the pieces together takes well over a year. "

While this year's show is over, auto enthusiasts have reason to get revved up again. Preparations for next year's show are already scheduled to begin Monday for next year's show. Be sure to fit it into your calendar for next year- if you have a fancy for cars that is.

"The Auto Show is the largest show that takes place in Sacramento, other than the State Fair," Castle said. "It takes all 13 buildings at Cal Expo, plus the three on-site 'Ride N Drive' test tracks."

The European-spec 2010 Ford Fiesta and redesigned 2010 Mustang will be two of many cars available. Attendees can visit the "Ford Ride N Drive Corral," located outside building D, for the entire line up of vehicles. Chevrolet will also be featuring models to test drive. Participants must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license to drive on the test tracks.

Attendees can expect to see the upcoming 2010 models and private collection cars from EuroSunday, and many other collector car clubs, such as Corvette and Mustang to name a few.

"EuroSunday is bringing an elite collection of 30-plus exotics in a benefit for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society," Castle said. "Show-goers can fill out a people's choice ballot for their favorite exotic. The car owner with the most votes will have a $3,000 donation made on their behalf to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society courtesy of the auto show."

Infineon and Mazda Laguna Seca race vehicles along with alternative transportation, such as scooters, golf-carts and ATVs, will be on site. The Howlin' Alan band will also be performing at the General Motors stage. In addition, there will also be a car sale.

"For the first time ever we are having a Classic Car and Rod sale," Castle said. "This year's show is offering a terrific mix of the new [car] products, plus close to 200 individual collector vehicles which include rare exotics, club cars, street rods, race cars and historic cars."

The Auto Show is kid-friendly and family encouraged. Building A will feature the "Kids Time's Out," with bounce houses, lounge areas for parents and movies to watch. This year, there is also a "Meal Deal" coupon available online, and Sunday is "Family Day" with free admission to kids 16 and under with a paying adult. Proceeds are being donated to local charities, and Sacramento high schools and community colleges to further promote automotive education.

More than $1 million has been donated to date, Castle said.

"The local area high schools with automotive programs will receive benefit," Castle said. "We have a mobile 'lending library' of automotive equipment that we trailer to the high schools because they can't afford to buy these pieces. The schools check them out, and then we pick them back up."

Local high schools and community colleges also receive scholarships and additional equipment, Castle added.

Despite the bleak economic outlook especially when it comes to purchasing new vehicles, Castle said she remains optimistic.

"I certainly believe the automotive market has shifted a bit this year," she said. "But Americans have always had a love affair with their cars, whether they are in the market to buy or not."

The Sacramento International Auto Show is Nov. 13 to Nov. 15, with the doors opening at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. $10 for adults; children 12 and under are free Friday and Saturday. Sunday is Family Day with a parent's paid admission, kids under 16 are free.

The City of Sacramento departments of Transportation and Economic Development invite residents to complete a Web-based survey to provide feedback on the K Street Vehicle Traffic Study. The survey results will be used by city staff and the project team to understand public sentiments about the idea and what features would be most important if the City went forward with a trial conversion.

To complete the survey, visit the project Web site at www.cityofsacramento.org/KStreetVehicleTraffic. The non-scientific survey will remain active until Saturday, August 22 at 12 noon.

Residents and interested parties are also invited to attend a community meeting on Wednesday, August 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A brief presentation by City officials and the project team will begin at 5:45 p.m. followed by questions and answers. A summary of survey results also will be relayed.

The community meeting will be held at the second floor of the California Association of Counties Conference Center at 1020 11th Street.

About the study

The K Street Vehicle Traffic Study project team is examining options for incorporating vehicle traffic to the K Street Mall between 8th and 12th streets. Currently, blocks are open exclusively to pedestrians and light rail. The study will analyze circulation and traffic, pedestrian and bicyclist patterns, and the potential for accommodating parking. The study will also include alternatives for all existing and necessary infrastructure.

In conjunction with the study, the city is also considering a pilot project to try opening two blocks of K Street to vehicles. The blocks from 8th to 10th streets or 10th to 12th streets are under consideration for the trial.

For more information about the study, visit the City of Sacramento Department of Transportation Web site at www.cityofsacramento.org/KStreetVehicleTraffic

Scores of classic and snazzy modern cars cruised J street Saturday afternoon, from Midtown to the Sac State University parking lot. The sight was veritable eye candy for any car enthusiast.

The event started in the early afternoon with staging of the cars for show on 18th through 20th streets on either side of J for spectators to meander and appreciate.

The event drew a constituency of folks to the midtown area who normally would not be there on a Saturday afternoon. It became a natural festival setting as attendees shopped and gleaned from side walk sales, giving local businesses a welcome boost for the weekend.

Although there are several automobile shows throughout the year in Sacramento, the art of the car cruising display has been lost in the City of Trees for decades. This Saturday, The California Automobile Museum and hundreds of car owners will be teaming up to present the debut of CAMBER (California Automobile Museum's Big Event on the Road), bringing back the old tradition of parading the merchandise along city streets to Downtown Sacramento.

"As far as we know, there has not been a cruise in Sacramento since back in the 50s when it was really popular," said Karen McClaflin, executive director of the California Auto Museum. "They'd cruise down J Street and K, going in a loop. So the idea was, 'why not let some of these guys who used to cruise bring their cars out and do it again?'"

The new event is being paired with the “Reno Swap Meet," the popular annual auto trading affair Sunday at Arco Arena.

Beginning at 2 p.m., CAMBER will commence with 250 cars gathering across six closed blocks in Midtown for onlookers to enjoy for a few hours. Since the show is scheduled around lunchtime, McClaflin said it should also allow spectators to not only enjoy a wonderful collection of cars, but also to sample the many quality restaurants and shops in the area.

"It's something that the community can really get involved with, and it can stimulate business for Downtown merchants," McClaflin said. "And it will hopefully be a fundraiser for the museum, as well as becoming just a part of the fabric of Sacramento.

"We wanted to create a venue that already has an audience, so putting it in the middle of town was a good option for us, where it's right where the people already are."

Nearly 5000 fliers were handed out along J Street to let residents know about the 3.5 mile cruise following the stand-still showing around 5 p.m. The cars will be police escorted along J Street to Sacramento State University, where they will re-assemble in lots 7 and 8 within the school parking lot. Local restaurants and vendors will bring their business to the display, coupled with live entertainment and a fan-voted awards ceremony.

"They'll re-park at Sac State and have a second car show there for folks who were maybe with their families or busy during the day," McClaflin said. "We've got Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers, and we'll do our awards program at 8 p.m., which is a people's choice award where they vote on various things like 'Best Under the Hood' to overall 'Best of Show.'"

McClaflin said she hopes CAMBER can one day rival other similar car cruises within the area, such as Reno's Hot August Nights, San Jose's Hot San Jose Nights and Redding's Cool April Nights.

Because it is the event's opening year, there is much uncertainty surrounding the Sacramento community's response to the show and cruise. However, McClaflin said the museum's planning team has been preparing for this Saturday for over eight months in hopes to launch CAMBER in impressive fashion.

"That is the big question," McClaflin said. "Is it going to be the New Year's Eve fiasco Downtown with way too many people? Or it could be a ghost town, I just don't know. Hopefully it's somewhere in between."

With summer well underway, it's the perfect time to check out the exhibit which features a collection of wooden automobiles, also called "Woodies," reminiscent of California summer days spent surfing and lounging on the beach.

Today Woodies are prized pieces in car collections and are famous for the exquisite craftsmanship on the wooden panels of the cars. The cars were the ideal mode of transportation for surfers who could tow their boards on top of the them.

The surf culture-themed exhibit opens Thursday, July 2 and the museum has an entire celebration planned surrounding the unveiling of the Woodies. Different variations of the wooden cars from the 1930s to the 1960s will fill the museum's special exhibit.

To complement the retro-surf theme, vintage surfboards and classic arts will be put up for the duration of the showing. The museum will also be playing popular surf movies like Endless Summer and Big Wednesday.

In addition to the cars, surf rock band The Retronauts will be performing at 6 p.m., and the Model P Popcorn Wagon will be serving freshly popped kernels. Woody's Bar and Grill will be providing food samples, and ice cream will also be available at the museum's ice cream parlor, Vic's, a 1950s-style shop.

Thursday's reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Regular hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will continue throughout the rest of the exhibit which will be on display until September 19.

Entrance into the exhibit is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $4 for students with an ID. Children under five are free. The auto museum boasts 72,000 square feet of automobiles throughout the decade and those who attend the exhibit can visit the museum's other displays also.

The California Auto Museum is located at 2200 Front St.

Why: You may get an idea for their music-style by the bands they’ve opened for: the likes of Evanescence, Papa Roach, Buck Cherry and Saliva to name a few. Norm MacDonald continues to be a major comedic presence. His totally hilarious impersonations of Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds on “SNL,” were my favorites. However, MacDonald proved that his wit and writing were not to just for small screen. Among others, MacDonald played roles in Billy Madison with Adam Sandler, The People Vs.

Here's the bit: there's this guy in Sacramento who's active in veterans rights, alternative transportation and the environment, who started this campaign called drive55.org, meaning you don't drive faster than 55 mph.

I interviewed him for my radio show and mentioned him a while back in my "Best of 2008" radio interviews which appeared here. He thinks that American motor vehicle operators should drive no faster than 55 miles-per-hour. Period. If your vehicle is human-powered (not by body fat) I guess you can go faster.

Tim Castleman is a man of patience and vision, who is taking a common sense approach to one of America's most volatile debates. In the '70s in order to preserve oil and blunt OPEC, our federal leaders passed a mandatory 55 mph speed limit into law.

Apparently the nation's vehicles did, in fact, get better mileage and save fuel. Side benefit: Highway deaths went down.

As pump prices leveled over the years and with much political wrangling, the power of the speed limit was returned to the states, which is probably just as well, constitutionally. As a consequence we are legally and illegally driving faster than 55, way faster.

But Tim Castleman is not campaigning for new laws, a constitutional amendment or anything coercive. To paraphrase, he thinks that driving no faster than 55 is the right thing to do.

He says that driving no faster than 55 mph will conserve fuel, save lives, save money, reduce some of our reliance on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, move us closer to true "energy indpendance" and give everyone naturally wavy hair. (Just kidding on the last one.)

By taking these measures (observing all speed limits and never exceeding 55 mph), no new technology need be introduced, no new laws need be passed, wars on multiple-fronts would be unnecessary and everyone gets to keep more of the money they earn.

The issue is neither Republican nor Democratic, liberal nor conservative, Hatfield nor McCoy, Agent versus Agent, Ranger versus Yogi, nor Grizzlies versus RiverCats. (PCL baseball reference).

Since founding drive55.org in 2008 Castleman has maintained the website, been ambushed on FOX and other right-wing media outlets and is now making available peel-away window stickers. He says, they are "removable 4 X 11 window clings for inside vehicles to warn speeders of the conservation-minded driver ahead."

Could anyone object to this simple voluntary step that costs no money?
