Migrant Children capture their lives through their own eyes

A sunny day on the grassy playground, family gatherings around the table, an empty house, Our Lady of Guadalupe – these are just some of the vivid imagery captured by children of migrant agricultural workers temporarily living in Yolo County. Each of these photographs tells the untold story of migrant children – their fears, hopes and dreams as they migrate with their families from season to season, farm to farm. Do public transit stops attract crime?

Last week’s fatal stabbing of 68-year-old Bernice Nickson took place at a downtown Regional Transit stop. While it would be hasty to let one incident determine RT’s entire reputation, the incident does beg the question: Are Regional Transit stops hubs for crime? Alane Masui, assistant general manager of communications for Sacramento RT, said no. She said that when crimes take place on the street, transit stops are just easy landmarks to associate with the incident. “It’s more of a perception than a reality,” she said. “When something occurs, people try to put the incident in context, and transit stops serve as regional landmarks.” There are about 3,800 bus stops and 47 light rail stati

Opening night a success at Sac Film and Musical Festival

If applause is any indication, those who attended Friday’s opening night of the Sacramento Music and Film festival at the Crest Theatre were far from disappointed. Mayor Kevin Johnson and directors Nate Schmel, Tony Sheppard and Laurie Peterson gave introductory speeches before the showing of the feature film, Sensored, to the delight of the near-sell-out crowd. Rousing ovations came between pauses of each speaker, who all repeatedly thanked the audience and everyone who was involved in all the preparation for the 10-day festival.
