It was like a pub crawl for history buffs – without the crawl. Saturday was the first ever Archives Crawl in Sacramento, an event where four leading historical research facilities highlighted their offerings to the general public. For five hours the California State Archives, the California State Library, the Sacramento Central Library and the Center for Sacramento History opened their doors, their files and their secret vaults to the general public. All of the information on display Saturday, can be seen for free but other than serious historians few people ever take advantage of the resources. Thanks to a grant from the California State Library, the Sacramento Public Library now has eReaders available for check out just like other books and materials. More than 100 eReaders will be available with approximately 20 pre-loaded books in different genres on each device, including best sellers, mystery, romance, science fiction/fantasy/horror, and biographies. Non-fiction and Spanish-language books will also be available. “We believe the Sacramento Public Library is the first in the nation to have this scale of pre-loaded lendable Nook eReaders for library patrons,” said Library Director Rivkah K. Wednesday, Sept. 22 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The California State Library begins American Library Association’s Banned Books Week with local celebrities reading excerpts from banned books at the Fragrance Garden. Thursday, Sept. 23 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The State Indian Museum will celebrate Native American Day on the South Steps of the Capitol with music and dancers to honor the spirit and contributions of the state’s indigenous people. About 300 people are expected to attend. Friday, Sept. 24 11:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Visitacion Valley Middle School students from San Francisco will be having lunch in Capitol Park. Wednesday, Oct. 21 1:30 - 3 p.m. Firestar Productions will be filming a California Firefighters Conference video. The crew of about six will be filming near the south steps and south lawn area of the Capitol. 5 - 9 p.m. The California State Library will hold their monthly "Food For Thought" event at the California History Room, room 200 of the Library & Courts Building II at 900 N Street. Held the third Wednesday of each month, the free event features a film, refreshments and discussion. This week's film is Young Frankenstein. About 80 people will attend the screening.
