After a number of construction delays that pushed Firestone Public House from its original projected opening date in February, the sports bar/restaurant will hold its grand opening on May 10. “We’ll have 20-plus TVs,” said co-owner Henry de Vere White, who also co-owns de Vere’s Irish Pub. “We’re going to show as many sports games as humanly possible.” Food will include a variety of dishes from burgers and steaks to appetizers, pizzas and other options. Co-owner Mason Wong previously told The Sacramento Press that Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and the Korean street tacos featured at GoGi’s Korean BBQ will likely be available as well. The restaurant occupies the 5,800-square-foot space a
Sacramento International Airport’s new Terminal B opened to the public on Sunday to give locals a preview of the $1.03 billion project before it opens for air traffic on Oct. 6. Airport spokeswoman Karen Doron said nearly 4,500 people made reservations to observe the terminal's new art and its elaborate design. “It’s beautiful,” said Merrilyn Hirsch, a 65-year-old retiree. “They really got their money’s worth.” Starting at 10 a.m., guests lined up to be the first to see the architectural feat. They were led onto the trains, called “people movers,” and brought from the terminal’s “land side” to the “air side.” The trains sped across the airport and went back and forth every two minutes, b
Mexican Tacos with Korean flair are coming to the corner of 15th and L streets as GoGi’s Korean BBQ is opening Tuesday in the former “Park To Go” kiosk. “GoGi’s tacos is a cross between Mexican and Korean taco stands,” said Executive Chef Christian Palmos. “Since there are no taco trucks allowed downtown, it’s a great location.” Palmos said many of the restaurants in the area are more upscale, and he thinks the takeaway food – with patio seating available – will be a good fit. “It’s great food at a great price, and we’re giving the first taco for free opening week,” he said. Tacos – made with Korean barbecue beef short rib, spicy pork, chicken or tofu – will cost $2, and burritos will
On Tuesday night at Cafeteria 15L in Sacramento popular singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles performed to a standing room only crowd. The mini-concert was presented by Now 100.5 and featured Sara singing four songs, answering some fans questions and then a quick meet and greet. With numerous hits like “Love Song,” ”Uncharted” and more recently “King of Anything,” Sara Bareilles is an artist that is taking the music industry by storm and Tuesday night she showed Sacramento just what she was capable of as she stepped-out onto the stage. While never missing a beat and sounding as good as she does on her CDs, Sara had the audience singing along with her to each song. After the first song Brian
I will remember Nov. 22, 2010, as a big blur of turkey – from spicy and delicious to bland and dry. As one of five judges in City Councilman Rob Fong’s 4th Annual Turkey Cook Off on Monday, I nibbled on slices of 16 cooked birds. Sixteen! In all my 31 years, I have never had so many consecutive tastes of separate turkeys. The event was a benefit for Loaves & Fishes’ Thanksgiving meal, which will be held Tuesday. While 16 restaurants entered turkeys in Monday’s cookoff, the restaurants prepared many other turkeys to add up to about 40. The event was held at Beatnik Studios near 17th Street and Broadway. Sister Libby Fernandez said community participation is key to Loaves and Fishes’ annu
Mason's New American Restaurant, the high dining that gave Downtown Sacramento a "big city" feel, will be closing its doors Feb. 15 to renovate and reopen as Cafeteria 15L. Co-owner of Mason's, Mason Wong, said that Cafeteria 15L will feature American comfort cuisine, what he sees as the next big trend in the food industry. Public relations manager Jennifer Bulotti said Wong has watched the development of the comfort food trend as it has grown in cities like San Francisco, New York, Portland and many others. "He’s seen this as a trend that appeals to a lot of people, and the draw toward comfort food dining is working in other similar cities," Bulotti said. The decision to transform Mas
