Four massive Seville olive trees were installed in The Bridge District’s Garden Park earlier this month setting the stage for a welcoming community space in West Sacramento’s newest development area. Garden Park is a three-quarter-acre public park billed as the “centerpiece” to the first stage of development of The Bridge District, according to Stephen Jaycox, senior vice president of design for The Bridge District’s designer/developer, Fulcrum Property. Jaycox said the design and planning of The Bridge District is unusual compared to typical new development plans. “We are starting with the green space and then moving on to building townhomes and apartments around it,” Jaycox said. “Thi
A prominent labor group in the Sacramento region has endorsed Mayor Christopher Cabaldon’s opponent, Greg Potnick, in the West Sacramento mayoral race. The Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, this week endorsed Potnick to become the city’s mayor. Potnick, a former City Council member of 12 years, said he will advocate for working families as part of his campaign. “I’ve been a union member and supporter my entire life,” Potnick said. Cabaldon said Wednesday that he had not yet heard from the labor council on its decision. He said he did not want to comment until he talked to the labor council and learned why it endorsed Potnick. Curiosity got the best of me and I had to actually see the big Butternut tree that has gotten all the attention lately. It is slated for removal so construction can begin for a pumping station for the Bridge District's sewage and storm runoff. The tree is at the bottom of the north side of Highway 50 along South River Rd in West Sac. It's a healthy looking tree and apparently one of the oldest Butternut trees in the US. In case you, too, were wondering what it looks like, here it is: SacPress Photo | Kati Garner
Two dozen residents of West Sacramento attended a public outreach meeting at their city hall to listen to city employees explain the ins and outs of the Bridge District Infrastructure Improvements Project on Thursday afternoon. "This is just our first attempt at getting information out on our project," said city Construction Administrator Drew Gidloff. The city's capital improvement manager, Maureen Pascoe, said the meeting was their effort to give residents the heads-up on traffic delays and project timelines. The project has been in the works since the 1990s and will cost $121 million, according to Toby Wong, city project engineer. It is being financed through a Proposition 1C grant.
Christopher Cabaldon is at the helm of an evolving city. The West Sacramento mayor said the city should be a place where families can raise children, but also a spot where young people want to be. City leaders are taking a positive view of developing West Sacramento, he said. “We’re not one of those cities that has a no-growth faction on the City Council and a growth faction,” Cabaldon said. “Everyone believes that there’s a lot of potential. The shape and pace of growth is always a question everywhere, and that’s true in West Sacramento as well.” In one major example of West Sacramento’s growth, the City Council in February approved a 386-unit housing project that will be located in th
It's a big hunk of a triangular-shaped pie. West Sacramento city officials want a large piece of a planned 12-million square foot development to move ahead. City leaders decided last week to back a 386-unit housing project that will be led by Sacramento developer Mark Friedman. Friedman’s project is part of a much larger development being planned for West Sacramento. The city plans to eventually transform a 188-acre expanse into a development project that could cover 12-million square feet, according to a Feb. 17 report written by West Sacramento city staff. The 386 homes will be built at the city’s riverfront in the Bridge District, according to the report. In the past, the Bridge Dis
