A JOURNEY OF HOPE - Part II

Written in memory of our brave daughter, Katie Janae Cramer, who went to Heaven January 6, 2011.   TO THE HOUSE OF THE KING Continued from A Journey of Hope- Part 1 It was January 2007, and our family would spend the next three years, three months climbing out of the valley of childhood cancer. We emerged - battle-fatigued and scarred - but we had emerged! And no one enjoyed being out of that valley more than our daughter. Katie seemed to have a renewed vigor for life. The battle hadn’t dampened her spirit - it energized it! She was ready to put her ordeal behind her and get on with life. She enjoyed her friends, being involved at church, and continued to excel in school. In February

The Silent, Priceless Gift of Blood

Donating blood? What have you got to lose? One pint, actually. The average person has between eight and 12 pints of blood, plenty for the body's needs, which means you have at least one pint to spare. And that pint can save three lives. How often do we hear that through the small things we do, the random acts of kindness, we leave footprints behind for others to follow? We know this. We believe this. But we often get so caught up in our daily lives, with work and family and who knows what else, that attempts to circulate our gifts outside our inner circle often get put on the back burner.  Well, there's a way to give that fits into even the busiest schedule. For me, that means a vi

Laughing really does matter

On Saturday April 9th, at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento, Fox40 and BloodSource hosted a fundraiser to benefit UC Davis Children's Hospital, (specifically the expansion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and the Foundation for America's Blood Centers (FABC). This first time fundraiser included Paul Robins (Fox40) as the Master of Ceremonies, local comedian Jack Gallagher as the featured act and Dave Coulier as the headliner. Dave is probably best known for his role as Joey in the 1980's sitcom 'Full House' and for hosting America's Funniest People. However, you have probably heard one of his many voices in cartoons and movies. The fundraiser brought together many local Sacramentans th

CSUS Students Unite with BloodSource to Save Lives

In order to be successful in any profession, I believe one must have experiences. Being successful to me means that you are knowledgeable and self-efficient in your profession and you are a credible source for people to seek after. Here at Sacramento State University, I have gained knowledge as well as experience in Public Relations. The Spring 2010 Blood and Marrow drive has given me the opportunity to have hands-on experience by planning and carrying out a PR campaign for the drive. ComS 158 (Public Relations Planning and Management) is where my classmates and I began our campaign and tried to make an impact on the Sac State community and beyond. Under the guidance of our instructor, Dr.

Why I Donate Blood

My mom has donated blood since she was 16 and has now donated over 20 gallons over her lifetime. I started giving blood at school blood drives when I was 16 but never really understood why my mom had such a passion for it.   Two years ago my dad had a heart attack and needed bypass surgery. It was a horrible surprise for my whole family because my dad eats healthy and exercises regularly. It seems there is only so much you can do to fight your family genes. He received a pint blood during the surgery and that is when I realized why it is so important to give blood regularly. My dad needed blood and without the people like my mom that donate every eight weeks, my dad may not have gotten th

CSUS STUDENTS UNITE WITH BLOODSOURCE TO SAVE LIVES

Public Relations students from CSUS are putting everything that they have learned to the test with a project that will touch lives beyond their campus. BloodSource, a community based blood bank in Sacramento has given them the opportunity to help organize a campaign for its on-campus blood drive on May 3rd and 4th.   Throughout the process of their campaign, “Unite to Save Lives,” Sac State students have learned the miracle that a blood donation can do through personal testimonies of people whose lives have been saved by receiving blood. The driving force behind their campaign is the unfortunate reality that of people who are eligible to donate, less than ten percent actually do.   A lo

Pay It Forward

People tend to shy away from blood or bone marrow donations because their automatic reaction is almost always pain. But, once you get past the thoughts of your own discomfort and realize that your actions are going to help literally save someone’s life, that 20 minutes of discomfort becomes not so important or trivial. In fact, many first time donors I have heard from say the process was not as bad as they anticipated. It’s like judging a book by its cover, but in this example you are the one who is writing its final chapter. One donation can save as many as three lives. Many people want to leave a legacy or help better their community. In my opinion, donating blood or bone marrow is a gr

CSUS Students Unite with BloodSource to Save Lives

Often times in college students are forced to work in groups with some acting as leaders and others lagging. This is not the case with Sac State’s Coms 158 class. They have pulled together to create an amazing public relations campaign for the upcoming blood drive for a nonprofit organization, BloodSource. Each person is volunteering, working and taking this campaign seriously. It is utterly amazing to see each student pour heart into the campaign and take on more tasks than one should sign up for. It is comforting to know that these hardworking students are our future leaders in the public relations profession. With this campaign, the public relations students have united to save lives
