Events at the Capitol this week

Thursday, Aug. 12 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Bloodsource Sacramento will be collecting blood donations near the fishpond. Friday, Aug. 13 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. The California State Library will hold a picnic near the patio and fragrance garden. About 100 people are expected to participate.

CSUS Students Unite with BloodSource to Save Lives

In order to be successful in any profession, I believe one must have experiences. Being successful to me means that you are knowledgeable and self-efficient in your profession and you are a credible source for people to seek after. Here at Sacramento State University, I have gained knowledge as well as experience in Public Relations. The Spring 2010 Blood and Marrow drive has given me the opportunity to have hands-on experience by planning and carrying out a PR campaign for the drive. Why I Donate Blood

My mom has donated blood since she was 16 and has now donated over 20 gallons over her lifetime. I started giving blood at school blood drives when I was 16 but never really understood why my mom had such a passion for it.   Two years ago my dad had a heart attack and needed bypass surgery. It was a horrible surprise for my whole family because my dad eats healthy and exercises regularly. It seems there is only so much you can do to fight your family genes. He received a pint blood during the surgery and that is when I realized why it is so important to give blood regularly. CSUS STUDENTS UNITE WITH BLOODSOURCE TO SAVE LIVES

Public Relations students from CSUS are putting everything that they have learned to the test with a project that will touch lives beyond their campus. BloodSource, a community based blood bank in Sacramento has given them the opportunity to help organize a campaign for its on-campus blood drive on May 3rd and 4th.   Throughout the process of their campaign, “Unite to Save Lives,” Sac State students have learned the miracle that a blood donation can do through personal testimonies of people whose lives have been saved by receiving blood. Thursday, Nov. 5 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Blood Source Sacramento will be holding a blood drive for an expected 50 participants. Their "mobile blood van" will be parked near the fish pond. No further events scheduled until Sunday, Nov. 8.

What's happening at the Capitol: August 5, 6, 7

Wednesday, August 5 No events are planned for this day. Thursday, August 6 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Blood Source Sacramento will be holding a blood drive for an expected 50 participants. Their "mobile blood van" will be parked near the fish pond. Friday, August 7 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A ceremony honoring veterans who have been awarded a Purple Heart will take place near the All Wars Memorial at the Capitol. It will include the laying of wreaths, posting of colors, and a 21-gun salute. About 50 people are expected to participate. The public is also welcome. No events are scheduled until Thursday, Aug. 13.

What's happening at the Capitol: July 13, 14

Monday, July 13 11 a.m.-Noon The office of State Senator Lou Correa has planned a Peruvian Independence Day ceremony on the west steps of the Capitol. The ceremony will include flags and speakers. About 50 people are expected to participate. Tuesday, July 14 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Health and Human Services will be holding a blood drive near the capitol in the Bateson Building at 1600 9th St. 7:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Girls on the Run of Greater Sacramento, a community program for young girls, will be holding a bake sale on the north steps of the Capitol.
