20th annual Sammies awards crank up volume in Midtown

The corner of 20th Street between J and K Street usually serves as the unofficial epicenter for Second Saturday in Midtown, a monthly celebration that seems to be slowly losing it's focus on the art and music culture aspect of the event in recent years. This past Saturday, however, something was different. The Sammies, Sacramento's annual music awards show, turned 20 this year, and that afternoon there was no mistaking that music and hometown love reigned supreme over excessive drinking and partying. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Sacramento

Every year on May 5, Mexico and parts of the United States celebrate Cinco de Mayo in honor of the victory won by the Mexican Army in 1862. Now it's time for Sacramento to celebrate with these restaurant specials and events around town. Here’s a round-up of Cinco de Mayo celebrations: Event: Cinco de Mayo Celebration Time: 5 - 10 p.m. Thursday. Location: Zócalo (A Taste of Mexico) on 18th Street and Capitol Avenue. Spring Block Party on Capitol Mall

On April 24, Capitol Mall will soon be home to one of Sacramento’s longest running events, Active 20-30 No.1 Club of Sacramento’s Spring Block Party. For 42 years, the event has been a fun way to raise money for local children’s charities. Thousands of people have helped raise millions of dollars to benefit groups such as the Sacramento Children’s Home, who is one this year’s beneficiaries. This year, there are several additions to go along with the new venue on Capitol Mall between 5th & 6th streets. An entire city block will be taken over for this year’s event! Photo Essay: St. Patrick's Day in Sacramento

Sacramento usually sees large crowds on Second Saturday. But Wednesday, it looked more like Dublin as thousands of green-clad Sacramentans attended block parties, drank green beer and celebrated everything even remotely Irish. The following is a photo essay, depicting some of the Wednesday evening festivities. The first seven photos are from the de Vere's St. Patrick's Day Block Party.
