Dozens of bikers braved the pouring rain and biked from West Sacramento through downtown and midtown, ending their soggy ride at the Bicycle Kitchen on 20th and I. Ed Cox, City Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator led this group ride Friday, May 1 to kick off Bike Month, a month-long event which encourages Sacramento-area residents to try bicycling as a mode of transportation. The ride followed a press conference in which Davis Mayor Pro Tem Don Saylor and Roseville Councilmember Jim Gray, co-chairs of the event, spoke about the importance of cycling. This event, sponsored by Sacramento Area Council of Governments and various transportation management associations and organizations, also encou
Imagine, for a moment, our city without traffic: Families safe to walk through downtown, cross the street, take their time to look at historic buildings and storefront window displays. No cars in sight. Bikes, skaters, and runners in the middle of the street and people out to play and have a great time. This is how Sacramento could look thanks to a local bicycle advocacy group, Bikeramento, which wants to create a more bike-able Sacramento. They have already secured the first Sunday of every month for Sac Sunday Streets, an event which closes Capitol Avenue to traffic between 18th and 28th streets, to take place every month from May to September from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The idea is this: ta
For about five months now, a group called Bikeramento have been waiting to hear those words out in the open: "Sac Sunday Streets" and yesterday, while they were all seated at City Council, CM Cohn announced it to Mayor Kevin Johnson and the Council Members. Sac Sunday Streets is a monthly fitness-based and family-friendly event revolving around the soft closure of Capitol Avenue from 3rd St. to 28th St. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the First Sunday from May Thru October 2009. The event's inspiration is modeled after events from cities in the world like Bogota, Colombia's Ciclovia and cities in the U.S. like San Francisco's Sunday Streets, Portland's Sunday Parkways, New York City's Summer St
Come join your fellow neighbors, entrepreneurs, activist and (you fill in the blank) to see Democracy in action. The 100 Minds group, an Oak Park based Think Tank, is hosting "City Council Meet-up Party: Democracy 101" at tomorrow's Council meeting. Participants are encouraged to wear your Bikeramento shirt, LJ Urban shirt, Sacramento Park(ing) Day shirt or whatever cause you're passionate and a laptop for live twittering, blogging or transcribing of the evenings discussion. You'll have the opportunity to see how democracy works on a local level and the steps necessary to take action. We'd like to show the City Council that we mean business with a large turnout of local leaders. Thi
Pulling victory from the jaws of impending thundershowers, Sacramento's weather and geography cooperated Saturday afternoon to produce a nearly-flawless "prologue" of the Amgen Tour of California. It was nearly as cold and windy as Sacramento gets, but the rain held off until the last riders were crossing the finish line around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The clear weather continued into the evening as the out-of-town crowds estimated to be more than 50,000 partied into the night and the Grid's monthly Second Saturday events. Though the race began in earnest Sunday, with 136 racers riding through gusts of wind and significant rain - and Sunday morning was marred by the early-hours theft of Lance
Last night was an amazing meandering ride from Downtown through Midtown for the 1st Annual Bikeramento Crawl. Set the scene of a moving banner from sanctuary to sanctuary in the light rain. It all begins with the religious experience of a cup of mojo at Temple Fine Coffee & Tea. The loose Bikeramentans gather and awkwardly introduce themselves to the team. It’s to be expected. Who are these bike-crazy folks, these Spokes People, who believe that they can influence city planning and have fun doing it? Ah….soak up that caffeine. A fine whiff of a single origin espresso parting the perfect foam of that cappuccino. David Barton shows up with the sharp photographer for Sacramento Press. And
We had a great beginning to Bikeramento Week, last night at the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen located in midtown. Ed Cox and Chris Dougherty put on a very informative presentation about riding around in an urban environment and how to keep our bikes safe for riding. Chris is a very engaging speaker with great tips. He stresses the importance of being visible to everyone on the road. "Blinking lights are good but as a motorist looking at them is hard to judge your distance. I recommend that you wear a solid light on the back of your jacket and on your helmet" he suggests. Chris also encourages us to learn to care for our bikes. "Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen is a good resource; you not only ca
