Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri
This week, The Sacramento Press teamed up with Athletes vs. Cancer to give one lucky person the chance to caddie for NBA star Matt Barnes at the AVC Celebrity Golf International on Saturday, July 24. We asked entrants to tell us why they thought they should be Barnes’ caddie for the day. We received great responses and have chosen the lucky winner: Larry Tipper! Athletes vs Cancer spreads awareness and provides screening opportunities. “Athletes have a positive influence,” Barnes said. When athletes voice their support, it brings more light to serious situations he said. The Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 at this year's event. All proceeds from the tour
This Saturday, July 24, Athletes vs Cancer (AVC) will hold the annual community event to support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver subsequent support to cancer patients. Founded in 2009 by Matt Barnes in memory of his mother, the Foundation has expanded to recruit additional athletes and coaches touched by cancer. It’s primary focus in 2010 is to secure a mobile cancer screening van. The vehicle will visit low-income neighborhoods providing free cancer screenings, awareness and resources from AVC and its partner organizations. This awareness-raising celebrity golf invitational takes place Saturday, July 24 at the lovely Woodcreek Golf Course in Rosevi
