New art gallery opens in Mansion Flats

Editorial Note: This is an updated version of a story that was published earlier. On Nov. 10, the new Milk Gallery opened at 212 13th St. Amy Greer, co-owner of the 1,500-square-foot art gallery, said that the current collection of local art will provide visitors with an interesting blend of artistic styles. Melanie Bown, a 39-year-old restitution trainer for the state and artist, opened the gallery with Greer, a 37-year-old restaurant employee and artist. Both Bown and Greer have backgrounds in art. Bown has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Bradley University, with an emphasis in printmaking. She teaches kids’ art classes at the Crocker Art Museum and was also an art installer pri

18-year-old offers a new art gallery to Second Saturday

Surrounded by midtown's most famous venues including Club 21, Mezkal and Cam's Salon and Spa on 21st Street sits a new art gallery open to the public.  Alex Bult, an 18-year-old entrepreneur, opened this gallery for the first time on November 12, coinciding with midtown's Second Saturday event.  He is perhaps one of the youngest gallery owners that Sacramento has seen but is no foreigner to the world of art.  "I've been interested in art for about four years," Alex Bult says. " I've been around art my whole life and have wanted to open a gallery since I was 16." Although Alex Bult's father, Matt Bult, and his grandfather, Wayne Thiebaud, are both artists, this young gallery owner is no

JAYJAY show marks 10 years

The owners of the East Sacramento art gallery JAYJAY will celebrate 10 years Saturday by doing what they do best: introducing Sacramentans to some of the finest works in the region. Partners Beth Jones and Lynda Jolley exhibit a mix of modern and post-modern art, with a lot of abstracts and some figurative/narrative work, mostly from regional artists – rather than the landscapes and other forms of realism that Sacramento and Northern California are known for and many Sacramentans are more comfortable buying. The last two years have been hard on art sales in Sacramento, and especially for galleries that don't focus on landscapes, they said. For that reason, it hasn't been easy for Jones a

Art dealer's death rouses project

The death of Sacramento art dealer Paul Thiebaud has stirred efforts to get started on construction of the Tribute Building as soon as possible, Heller Pacific officials said Thursday. Thiebaud died Saturday of colon cancer at age 49. He had been partnering with developer Mike Heller Jr. on a project to build a modern, mixed-use office building featuring a tile mosaic of the Sacramento River by his father, artist Wayne Thiebaud. The two friends had planned to build the $12 million, four-story structure to honor their fathers — contractor Mike Heller Sr., who died in 2007, and the elder Thiebaud — and their collaboration on Sacramento Municipal Utility Department headquarters more than 50

Art Bra Show

Fun has its serious side at the 2nd Annual Art Bra Show. The exhibit, with pieces from 100 Sacramento artists, is being held at 40 Acres Art Gallery, 35th Street and Broadway in Oak Park. It runs through Saturday and is put on by the Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation and Women's Wisdom, a program of Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. A bra is depicted in every sculpture, painting, sketch and tapestry. "The goal of the show is to bring a public awareness about the plight of breast cancer and its effects on all women," said Helen Plenert, Women's Wisdom project manager. "Participants in Women’s Wisdom Art, a program of SFBFS that helps women overcome loss, depression, cancer or l

Halfpipes and skate decks on board at art reception

Art enthusiasts and skateboarders came together Saturday at downtown's A Bitchin' Space Gallery for a night of skating, dance music spun by DJ Chris Martinez and, of course, art. The show, "Boards and Graphics," ran from Friday through Sunday and hosted its reception last night as part of the Second Saturday Art Walk. Curator of the show, gallery owner and skateboarder Gale Hart invited more than 30 artists from around California to participate in hand-painting skate decks, most of them created by Sacramento-based Legend skateboards. "It's really interesting to see the different styles and techniques via the skateboard as a canvas," said Mike Edwards, who attended Saturday's reception.

Artists get on deck for skate-themed art show

Gale Hart, owner of the art gallery A Bitchin’ Space, is also a skateboarder and artist. So it makes perfect sense that this Saturday, as part of Downtown’s Second Saturday Art Walk, Hart will be curator of “Boards and Graphics” at her gallery, a showing featuring all things skateboarding. The show, sponsored by Scion, will feature hand-painted skate decks by more than 30 artists from Sacramento, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Most of the decks featured in the show were made by Sacramento’s own Legend Skateboards and the artists were personally invited to participate in the show by Hart . "[Gale] asked me to participate in this show and my knee-jerk reaction was, 'I'm not a painter' ...
