Shedding convenience for military families

Rodney Stanhope is living in a shed at Arden Fair Mall, and he isn’t there to shop. The shed lacks running water or kitchen facilities, and he “showers” with baby wipes. His living space is just big enough for a cot, a couple of camp chairs and a small shelf for his computer. Stanhope, a Navy veteran and small business owner who normally lives in Placerville, has one mission this holiday season: collecting toys for military families with one or both parents deployed overseas. “We can’t bring mom or dad home, but we can make sure they have a happy Christmas,” Stanhope said. “Their parents are out there fighting for our freedom and putting their lives on the line.” Though he partners wit

Black Friday Shopping and Mayhem

Thanksgiving evening at 11pm, Ed Fogle and I joined forces to capture the Black Friday shopping frenzies. Our adventure began at Arden Fair Mall. Here is a timeline: 11:49pm - Thanksgiving evening Traffic at Arden Fair Mall was ongoing. Busses continuously dropped shoppers off. 12:01 AM At the front of the mall, the line's tail-end of shoppers were sprinting to get through the doors. 12:04 AM Elevators were packed. Shoppers were packing into stores! Apple was busy! Shoppers with bags streamed out of Macy's. 1:47 AM Fry's Electronics at Northgate Blvd had a long line of shoppers trying to stay warm in 34 degrees. The woman in the blue cap arrived at 10am Thanksgiving.

American Idol auditions bring hundreds of hopefuls to Sacramento

The nerves, pressure and tension could be cut with a knife during the “American Idol” auditions at Arden Fair Mall. Seventeen-year-old Sam Cracraft drove from Vallejo early this morning to ensure his place in line. “I feel like I am going to throw up,” Cracraft said. “I have never sung in front of anyone before.” Cracraft didn’t throw up, and in fact did very well, singing a song by The Script while playing his guitar (that he only just learned to play this year). When asked how he would feel if he didn’t make it, he replied, “if I don’t, it means I am not ready, and that’s OK with me. I will keep practicing.” Chantel Robinson, 24, from Natomas said she is here to win. “I know the jud

Sac to plan streetcar's route

The city of Sacramento is back at the drawing board — literally — on its efforts to set up a streetcar connecting to West Sacramento. A new study to plan the streetcar route in Sacramento has received $310,000 in federal grant funds. An additional $90,000 from a local source will help pay for the study, according to a July 27 report from the city’s Transportation Department. The City Council signed off on the new funding Tuesday night. “What we’ll be doing now is looking now more broadly at the best routes for that system on the Sacramento side,” Councilman Steve Cohn said Wednesday. In the most recent plan, the streetcar would run from West Sacramento City Hall, across Tower Bridge an

Unruly crowds? NOT

Arden Fair Mall sported well-behaved crowds today. Last night a midnight sale for the new Air Jordan athletic was cancelled when potential shoe buyers rushed mall doors and started pushing others. That sale was cancelled. This afternoon the scene seemed like a normal, bustling shopping day right before Christmas: Parents and kids endured lines waiting for Santa pictures to be taken, shoppers traversed escalators and stores, lovers sneaked kisses, clerks and delivery persons carried on. Here are some scenes:                           SacPress Photos | Kati Garner
