The very beginning of The Sacramento Press

Recently a reader emailed and asked me about The Sacramento Press as a business. What is our direction? How do we make money? Why would anyone want to write for The Sacramento Press? I think it is best to start at the beginning. Geoff and I wanted to cover local news. We were both working other jobs at the time and The Press was just an idea. We wanted to start a traditional newspaper, brick and mortar, with regular paper editions and a full staff of writers. Plus we wanted to have an online edition with a focus on community debate. We put together a business plan and had some consultants take a look. It didn't go well. This was in 2003 and even back then most people realized paper newspa

Tell us about your experience

Over a month ago I asked everyone: what is wrong with The Sacramento Press? It was an attention grabbing headline, but more importantly it opened an honest conversation between all of us who run and write and read The Press. Now I am asking for broader feedback: tell us what you like and don't like about The Sacramento Press. Give me suggestions for our operations, marketing and sales. The last time I asked we got feedback that helped us build out a better help section, fix bugs, add features, and even begin a path towards changing our legal agreements. We are always looking to improve our site and operations. We don't have all the answers, but I hope we continue to ask the right quest

What we're all about

The Sacramento Press will be the most comprehensive, local news source and information center for the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. We are a strictly online newspaper. Our writers are primarily volunteer Community Contributors. We combined the best tools on the web and built an outstanding platform from scratch. This platform enables people to tell stories about their neighborhoods and have thoughtful conversations about these stories. Then our editors place the best content on the front page and section pages to highlight great work. The casual experience is like a traditional newspaper. We take pride in putting the content front and center. We also take pride in making our tools for r

Our role and the rule of law

A traditional newspaper is a one way street. They write, you read. This policy has worked out pretty well since the first American newspaper was published in 1690. The publishers of newspapers were the primary gatekeepers of daily news and information. They chose what content you saw, and what content you didn't, but they also made pledges to fact check their content and be held accountable for what they wrote. Thus reporting was something for the professionals and best left at that.   Then in the early 1990's the world became acquainted with the World Wide Web, and the Internet caught the world's attention. The Internet was and remains the land of the amateur, the place where anything

How do we make money?

We sell advertising. However, you will not see any pop up ads or ugly flyovers on our site. And you won't see lists and lists of button adds or text adds crammed on the sides and bottoms of our pages. All of us at the Sacramento Press use our own site and rule number one is if it looks bad to us then it will look bad to you. Our advertising is based not on the number of eyeballs we can distract or the number of clicks we can generate. It is based on the privilege of sponsoring the best stories and conversations about Sacramento. Our advertisers want to be associated with you, not distract you! We respect that our advertisers keep us in business and sponsor your great writing. So we do no

Featured Comment of the Day

from What we're all about

This area has been lacking real "local" news since the Sacramento Union went under the first time. I wish every news organization was run like this. Easy to use, interactive, and just local stuff we care about.

The Sacramento Press policy enforcement change

Until April 14th, 2009 we, at The Sacramento Press, had been lax in enforcing our policies. As of that date we have begun to more strictly enforce our policies. We strive to be the best source of local news and information in the Sacramento area. We aim to do that with a mix of paid reporting, and contributions from the Sacramento community. However our site is primarily written by community volunteers who submit their content without direct contact with The Sacramento Press Anyone who lives in Sacramento is welcome to sign up and write for our site with no editorial approval prior to posting. It is a very free system, the only caveat is that you abide by the rules and policies of the si

Our Vision

I wrote this document a couple of years ago when Geoff and I were just developing a set of ideas that would eventually lead to The Sacramento Press. it is our vision. We are working hard every day to make this a reality. And so far, with your help, we are getting there. Compare the words news and information. News is a form of information. It is quick, disposable, always up to date, decimated from a few to many; it is new. Information is much broader. It can be old or new, it can flow in any direction (between people and organizations in webs and bursts). Disregard the traditional parameters of a newspaper. Imagine instead a greater variety of information. There is more of it now; it is f
