Tonight's Neighborhood Advisory Group meeting could flare up over ongoing conflicts between two opposing groups.
At the same time, Marshall Park neighbors and other residents will look to the city for answers after violence broke out outside J Street bars and outdoor concerts were held over the weekend without notice to residents, just weeks after controversial Midfest and Cinco de Mayo events.
The two groups -- organized neighborhood association members and business interests -- have tried in the past to work out differences involving the neighborhood impacts of a block of J Street bars and restaurants. More problems and concerns arose over special events held in the area in May.
Now a group organized by people with business interests and local residents who agree with them plan to attend tonight's meeting to give their perspective on the special events if needed. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Hart Senior Center, 915 27th St.
One issue neighborhood association members have been concerned with is what they say is growing violence at the bars and nearby. A shooting occured outside Harlow's, 2708 J St., about two years ago. Some bullets were fired into cars parked across the street at Marshall Park.
During the block's Cinco de Mayo street party in May, someone with a knife cut another customer inside Harlow's, said Police Sgt. Norm Leong. No suspect was caught.
At 1:47 a.m. Saturday, Sacramento Police broke up a group fight reportedly involving gunfire on the east side of the alley at 28th Street near J Street, said Leong.
At least one neighbor called police to report the fight and the sound of shots fired. No one appeared to have been shot, and no evidence of the reported gunfire was found by police, he said. Police detained two people but no one involved wanted to pursue charges. No police report was filed on the incident.
On Saturday -- two weeks after Midfest at Marshall Park -- a day of concerts and live music was held in a parking lot (formerly a Carrow's restaurant) owned by GV Hurley's, 2718 J St.
City staff could not immediately verify whether a special events permit was issued for the event, which was held on private property, nor whether the amplified sound was monitored by the city.
Last week, members of Marshall School/New Era Park Neighborhood Association began meeting with city council members or staff to discuss a proposed special events ordinance currently being drafted.
As clarification for the author - it is one person trying to stir stuff up - A former mayoral candidate and possible council candidate next year - in the vein there is no such thing as negative press.
