The summer edition of the Sacramento Fire Department's Community Newsletter discusses the dangers of swimming in the river.

It mentions that the river bottoms can be uneven and have steep drop-offs and the currents are strong, so a life vest should be worn at all times.

Under the City and County of Sacramento ordinances, it is against the law for a child under the age of 13 to enter public waters without a life vest. Parents or guardians who do not put life vests on their children can be fined up to $500 and cited for a misdemeanor.

If you don't have a life vest on hand, there are plenty of places to borrow one.

The following fire stations have life vests for the public to borrow:

I had no idea that fire stations rented out life jackets... what a great idea! It always makes me so angry when I see children on boats without life jackets on.

Casey,

We do not rent life jackets, we loan them. The Sacramento Fire Stations above, are the stations within the City that loan life jackets. However if you visit www.dbw.ca.gov you will find a site that has the locations of many Fire Stations throughout California that loan life jackets. Also there are life jacket stations along many of our local water ways that have life jackets you can borrow. These sites are maintained by the County of Sacramento. Some of these locations are at Discovery Park, Howe Avenue Boat Ramp, and a few more along the American River. As Firefighters we love the fact that people do take advantage of these life jackets, but I have to also say that it is important to return them for others to use. We do have a slight problem with persons keeping them and not returning them. Which is kind of OK, because at least people are using them! But these life jackets are donated to us, we do not buy them, so it's important to return them! Thanks!

That's a really great way to promote safety! Can people just drop off life jackets at the stations as a donation? Are there certain conditions that need to be met?
