Approximately 10:30 p.m. Fri. May 22.  My girlfriend and I were entering our car parked on the corner of 14th and Q Streets after enjoying some portabella and tofu burgers at Burgers and Brew.

A loud crack rang through the night air drawing my attention.  Seconds later a second crack followed, this time louder.  I surveyed the street wondering if I heard a minor car accident when the unique sound of splitting wood occurred.

I watched as a branch, at least 15 feet in length with several large branches attached to it fell 50 ft. to the street landing directly on the hood of a car.

We walked around, amazed at what we had just witnessed, when I noticed a sign posted on the street directly in front of the tree.  The sign stated, "No Parking 5-23.  Tree Trimming."

I snapped a few pictures as a police car pulled up and an officer exited the vehicle to access the situation.  I asked him if this happens often to which he replied, "Yes," and continued to do his job.

So apparantly trees fall onto cars all the time in the city, and I have seen this on a few occassions, however I find it extremely ironic that this particular tree was scheduled for maintenance the following day--no doubt to take care of the branch that failed only hours before they could trim it.

See pictures for the incident.  Enjoy your weekend and be careful when parking under large trees!  Luckily no one was injured, although my girlfriend and I had quite a start to have a branch fall less than 20 ft. from where we stood.

Was the tree a mature elm, by any chance?
The elms around the downtown/midtown grid are excellent shade trees, but they were planted around the turn of the last century and are at the end of their lifecycle. At this stage they tend to lose their main branches -- with the effect you witnessed. Drive around after a windy day and you will find elm limbs spraawled on streets and yards and anything that gets in their way. Hot days are a problem for tree integrity as well because the tree is storing up water and the added weight can result in a shattered limb.

I am no expert on the subject of trees and frankly out on a limb here with the precise facts, but this has been my observation as a resident of downtown Sacramento.

"...enjoying some portabella and tofu burgers.....". Words I never thought I would hear. Seriously.
Note: Jim Denny's closes at 3 today, but Nationwide Freezer Meats stays open later!

LOL, I live on 15th & Q and unfortunately the car belonged to a girl that was at my party that night...we came out a few hours later to discover the tree guys cutting apart the branch off the roof of her car! luckily only a few dents/scratches....
