Adventure-seeking canines will be the stars at Saturday’s grand opening of the Sutter’s Landing dog park.
Sutter’s Landing Regional Park, once a city landfill, is already a top spot to take Midtown dogs due to its setting on the American River.
The three-acre dog park offers chihuahuas, labradors and St. Bernards a new leash-free place to play with their companions. The park includes shade canopies and trees, a dog drinking fountain, fencing and separate areas for large and small dogs.
The park is covered with decomposed granite and recycled mulch, which the city estimates will save thousands of gallons of water each year.
Staff from the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation and City Councilmember Steve Cohn will welcome dogs to the park at 28th and B streets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The park’s mission has been to turn a closed landfill into an asset for the city. Sutter's Landing also contains a skate park.
“For the first time since Sutter’s historic boat landing site became a landfill over 100 years ago, trees and landscaping are now taking root,” Cohn said. “The addition of this new dog park will allow the community to continue to see Sutter’s Landing Park in a whole new light.”
Community Reinvestment Capital Improvement Program funds were issued for the project several years ago, before the recession, according to Hindolo Brima, spokesperson for the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
Why can't these people walk their dogs around the block?
I for one do not want tax dollars going for luxuries like dog parks. Our City spends more money on animals than it does for the youth in our community, this is simply obscene.
Whats next $10,000.000 cat cages and $650,000.00 to count trees? Oh that's right we have those too.
Ok fine take your dog to the park, there should be a user fee of $20 bucks a month per dog.
why the heck should people who do not have dogs pay for the enjoyment you find taking your dog to the dog park.
Stop being lazy and take your dog on a walk around the block.
The grant provided for consultants to do far more than that. It was to do something that the city of trees has never done before: 1. Identify the number of each species of trees throughout the city and the addresses where they are located. 2. Record the addresses where trees were missing because they have not replaced when the original tree was removed. 3. List the addresses where the consultant recommended replacement. 4. Assess the health of the various species of trees. 5. For public safely reasons, recommend removal of those that appeared to be unhealthy. I'm not sure about the following but I thought that the consultant may be trying to determine the age of the trees too.
All of this information is valuable to UFS to maintain our shade canopy and project for budget purposes future removal and replanting.
We visited the park this morning, and I was impressed by the simplicity of the park, and by how little it would cost to do this particular build out. Then I snapped back into reality and pondered how much we likely did pay for this park, and I became a bit depressed. Has anyone heard the construction cost figures?
I understand the funds were procured thru a bond when the city's government was flourishing years ago.
The bottom line for me is most of my life all i have seen is government taking from us in the form of taxes and not giving back, but taking our money and using it to loan to other countries and manufacture war machines. it is refreshing to see our local government give something back to our community for our tax dollars. There are a lot of dog lovers out there and yes you can walk your dog just about anywhere you want on a leash, but the dog really never has an opportunity to jump, and run, and chase butterflies or a ball unrestricted without a leash like dogs were able to do when i was growing up and there was no leash law. I love animals and am very happy there is such a place a doggie owner can take his or her pet and it have the space and opportunity we all wish for which is more freedom to be.
You know something else that is special and that is that the city did not go out and buy this land, but found and old land fill that i think the city owned and created this from an old land fill that had been closed. Now thats real creative thinking and saves the tax payers lots of money and i want to thank Mr Cohn and the city council for giving back to our community. Kudos to our local government from a mid town resident and may all you doggies and doggie owners have a blast in your new free park.
