Driving through midtown, there’s always been one store front that has stood out to me. As someone with slight type-A tendencies, the sign outside of Buff Castle has always driven me nuts! I wasn’t ever sure if it was even a currently open store, or if some kids had just spray painted the outside of the building. Since I was meandering, I decided to finally check it out.

If you’re looking for reasonably priced retro (80’s and back) clothes / costumes, they have them. The store isn’t packed to the brim, but what they do have is affordable. According to Liz, the owner, pretty much everything is under $20. Sweet! Although they don’t do consignment straight across, they do pride themselves on buying and then selling handmade goods, whether it be clothes accesories, etc. In asking her about her shop and what makes it unique, I was happy to find out Liz is a music lover.

Buff Castle has a collection of vinyls for sale (most $2 each!), but more noteworthy than that - they are a huge local music supporter. Anyone who wants to sell their music in the shop can do so, and keep all the profits. Liz has used her storefront as well as her own house “Fun Castle” (behind the store) as a musical catalyst, hosting shows for local bands, as well as bands from as far as Canada who are touring through. Shows range from indie to underground, electronica, punk or even folk.

They also specialize in vintage, handmade, screen-printed clothing and accessories. They do art shows, and sell art books as well.

As someone who was raised to never ask a woman her age, I refrained from asking Liz. But I have to say that I am completely impressed and inspired to see someone well under 30 who owns her own store and chooses to use what she has to impact the Sacramento music scene. I know I’ll be checking their website for upcoming shows and make sure I’m supporting someone who’s contributing to Sacramento’s art and culture. Thanks Liz!

Wow, thanks Kari, for not only checking out the Castle, but for taking the time to give me a peek into a fun to place to shop! I hope others will check out Liz's place too!
