May 20, 2009
West Sacramento, CA

Though the community near Cummins Way and Keegle Drive was packed with police cars, news vans with communications masts in the air, and a large amount of onlookers, there was a tangible quietness that hung in the night air. Neighbors and passersby looked on in stillness and hushed tones as investigators meticulously and patiently combed through the scene in the middle of the blocked off street of this West Sacramento shooting tragedy.

Neighbors related that at approximately 6 p.m. two men with pistols walked up to a neighbor’s house and opened fire. Occupants of the house under fire came out with a shotgun and returned fire on the two men. When the shooting ended and the dust settled, two men were on the ground and four others were wounded.

“On May 20, 2009, at approximately 6:15 p.m., West Sacramento Police Officers responded to a call of a man down in the street on the 1100 block of Cummins Way” said Lieutent Tod Sockman of the West Sacramento Police Department in a press release today. “When officers arrived on scene there were two males lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds. Police units from Sac PD, Sac Sherriff and Yolo County responded to assist. “Joe Villanueva, 32 year old male from West Sacramento was pronounced dead on the scene. The other male’s name is not being released until family members can be notified,” said Sockman. Out of the other four wounded, one was another gunman with non-life threatening injuries; two were bystanders hit by pellets from the shotgun blasts and the fourth victim showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Near midnight, West Sac Police secured signed warrants to search two addresses related to the shooting.

Lieutenant Stockman states, “During the initial incident a perimeter was establish looking for a male that ran from the scene. That male was identified as Adrian Villanueva, 31 year old male, and the brother of Joe Villanueva. He is a person of interest and it is unknown what if any involvement he had in the incident. If anyone has any information of his whereabouts they are encouraged to call the West Sacramento Police Department at 916-375-6474. This incident appears to be part of an ongoing neighborhood dispute between neighbors. “

I suspect all those involved were gang members or involved with drugs....

One thing I do like about this story is that at least one of the gunmen was killed; and the surviving gunman may end up being charged under the felony murder rule, regardless of who pulled the trigger or how the death occurred, getting him off the street for a long 25 to life sentence.

maybe you should read the updated version.. the man dead was no "gunman" he was there defended his mother after she'd been "jumped" by the neighbor and their kids from across the st. and you "suspect" their gang members because why? their mexican? they live in west sac? if you knew them then you'd know that they were filipinos.. whites.. asian.. mexican.. and half black..
you should watch what you say before you get all the facts in..

It's very unfortunate that our society today is so stereotypical and often shallow!
I had family hurt that day and no matter what anyone says a innocent man died that day.No matter what some might think we can never remember all the facts nor recall them exactly, our own personal opinons will cloud our thoughts and the stories we tell. The facts are that nobody was or has been charged to this day! And at this point it is fair to say that prior events between the victims on both ends led to a day of very unfortunate events.

To Jim Knapp. I don't understand why people keep acussing them of being the broderick boys. My cousin Joseph Villanueva, one that was killed, was only protecting his mother from an ongoing incident between the two families. Joseph was a loving caring person always happy and smiling. A bit shy at first. He was very invovled with his family and LOVED going to the kids baseball games. So shame on you who think just because you read what's put in the papers and what's being said is the truth. and how DARE you say well the one thing you like about the story is that AT LEAST one of the gunman was dead! That's waaay outta line. You mean to tell me if ANY of you was in his shoes and it was YOUR mother in danger and u being her son/daughter you wouldnt do all you can to protect her???!!!! If you answer no that you wouldnt do whatever is necessary then u are a FULL BLOWN COWARD!!! If you knew him and our family you will see how close we are and how much we all love eachother and will do ANYTHING to protect eachother!!! He was taken from us and left his young beautiful three children here on earth. So comment on what u read if you'd like BUT be RESPECTFUL and understanding that you DONT know the whole true story. God bless everyone and I hope no one will have to go through what the "Villanueva Family" has been through. Crime is all over the world, all over Sacramento. Of all races and non-gang related circumstances. Stop labeling something you know nothing about.

We might be old and white but we aren't jumping to conclusions.
Why would they be gang-bangers just because they are 1) from Broderick and 2) because they are hispanic? Until the police labels them as such (and God knows they are sometimes all too happy to paint an entire demographic with a broad brush) how does anyone know if it was gang related or just plain stupidity?
Also Ed, I think it's the height of journalistic irresponsibility to 'insinuate' or hint 'that's what I'm hearing' without producing a viable source or actual verifiable reason for your allegations.

You are very correct; that is why it is not in the story. I also prefaced by stating "unofficially" and made it clear. I do have some very reliable sources on this, but just can't validate for sure; therefore, the rest of the info I have is not part of the story. Remember, this is the conversation section and here we can conversate and even speculate if you, Mr. Knapp or myself choose to.

Wow, lots of racists must dislike my post.
Just because this happened in Broderick, does not make this automatically a Broderick Boys issue.
Same as how crimes in Rocklin aren't automatically committed by the Aryan Brotherhood .

PS the street name is Kegle.

UPDATE: On 5/24, Sundays Bee stated:

"But Reisig, (The District Attorney) in announcing Moniz' s release, made a point of saying Villanueva and his friend had ties to the Broderick Boys street gang.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been able to stay on top of it over the weekend. I had some unofficial sources who were close to this telling me it was Broderick related, but I wasn't able to verify it. I'm still waiting on responses from West Sac PD's Public Information Officers. But Mr. Reisig's comment defiantly makes it official.
