Tuesday, November 4th was to be like nearly every other Tuesday in my life. Head into the office, do some email, make some connections, then get picked up by my best friend Abe Cunningham for our weekly lunch at Tuli Bistro. But when Abe called fifteen minutes before our meeting time, I wasn't prepared for the news he would deliver.

Chi Cheng, our good friend and brother, was in a severe car wreck in Santa Clara and is in a coma. For those of you who know him, you know he's a man mountain of positivity and all smiles all the time. For those of you who don't, Chi is a native of Stockton and Sacramento, a poet, a musician, and a father. As the bassist for Deftones, he's helped elevate Sacramento's relevance on the global music map. Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is there with him, as well as family. Drummer Abe, Juan Gonzalez, and more will arrive today. There are no other details to share at this time other than he is holding up. However, he needs your help.

I call on all in Sacramento to send your prayers, positive vibes, energy, healing forces, and any other life-force you can muster Chi's way. I know his strength combined with San Jose's finest medical officers will pull him through this, but I need this entire valley to send good thoughts toward Chi's recovery.

I thank the entire Sacramento Press community in advance.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Chi and his family. I was blessed in the early 90's to experience his kind heart and happy go lucky, witty personality. I pray that he he has a full and quick recovery.

Chi Update 11/10/08
As you can see from last night's additional update, Chi is showing definite signs of improvement. His father expects when he fully awakes, they'll have to sedate him (again) so he doesn't start pulling out the tubes and wires from his body.

"Again you all are so very much appreciated. God has his hand on our son, please continue to lift him in prayer. For today please forgive someone who has wronged you or wronged yours. Not forgiving is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die. Please continue to stay buckled, show love and spread kindness throughout the day to those around you".

new update-

Hello Everyone,

Chi's condition is stable, with no real change since yesterday. Our gratitude to all of you for your encouragement and willingness to wait for him. Chi had been at the coast with a few of his siblings and I and forgot to bring the last book he bought. The book, Wake Up by Jack Kerouac, has been brought to the hospital by his wife and we are all reading it to him.

Today's assignment is to be a the sister, brother, and mother to all. When you have an action to take, try to do with that in your mind through your day. You will be continuing the good work done for all of us and our extended family.

What a comfort this is to me and mine. You are so awesome! Please keep the prayers coming! Buckle-up and designate a driver if you want to party. Some lives will be saved today with this small change.

All My Love and Respect,
Jeanne

Chi Update 11-18
Hello Friends,

My apologies for the delay in updates. Chi's condition remains the same - serious, but stable. He still lies in a coma, however his vitals (heart, lungs, and blood pressure) all exhibit very stable functions and doctors have begun removing much of the excess monitoring equipment. Chi remains strong in his fight to recover.

Winston Churchill once said, "Never give in - in nothing, great or small, large or petty, except to convictions of honour and good sense." Today, please be especially aware of your personal choices. Never give in to pressure and try not to be discouraged. Your good choices each day will bring good things back to you and create a better life for you and yours.

Moving forward, I will be creating a new blog dedicated to my daily updates. It will take me a few days to get this up and running, so please bear with me. Deftones will continue to update you on Chi's condition when there’s a significant change in his condition.

Thank you again for keeping Chi in your prayers. It's keeping all of is strong.

Our love to you all,
Jeanne

Chi Update 12/9/08
Hello,

Chi remains in a coma, and as of this morning there's been no significant change in his condition. Last week he was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and transferred to a brain rehabilitation hospital in Northern California. The hospital specializes in the care and management of traumatic and non-trauma related brain injuries with a team of highly skilled therapists, nurses and consultants. He's in great hands.

Please continue to pray for our brother, and thank you all for your love and support.

All The Best!!!!
Hello all! I just wanted to take a moment to say hi and to wish everyone a very Merry X-Mas and to let you know how much all of your positive comments and energy mean to us, to Cheng and to his family. It truly means the world. On that note, Chi's condition still remains about the same. I wish I could elaborate, but there's not to much to add at this time, other than I know he's pissed and wants the fuck outta' that hospital......................for real, this I know.

.....................that being said, on a night like tonight, I hope that everybody is warm and with the people that they love. Here's to all of you and here's to a wonderful and extremely Happy and Healthy New Year!!!!!!

Much love,

Abe & Deftones
