From CFL light bulbs to shopping with our own, reusable bags, we all have a "green" conscious and try to do the little things to reduce waste, pollution, and energy use. In the home, there are so many other things we can do, both big and small, to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

Green Sacramento, who moved to the midtown area about a year ago, supplies both homeowners and builders alike with green materials for flooring, painting, and countertops. They have stepped up their efforts to be green, which allows them to become even more responsible for not only the products and chemicals put into new developments, but also the handling and recycling of materials reclaimed. They have recently expanded to Green Sacramento Builders, who are the construction and deconstruction side of sustainability. With this addition many homeowners in the Sacramento area, especially the midtown and downtown area's with the older homes, have the resources to remodel their homes, recycle the older materials, and make their home healthier.

Green Sacramento Builders is focused on not only building and remodeling, but also on the deconstruction of buildings and the manner in which those older materials are either disposed of or stored for later projects. Their services include construction, deconstruction, interior design, landscape, and consultation. Unlike any other builder in the Sacramento area, sustainability is a top priority and echoed in all practices, projects and materials. With a concentration on community, they strive to make the best of what is around, and work to make communities not only more sustainable, but also more cohesive.

With an overlapping philosophy with Green Sacramento, Green Sacramento Builders believe sustainability is a way of life; from social interactions to economic conditions, there is a calling to go green and be conscious of the effects your actions have on the environment.

Designers are on hand to help design projects, materials are on display to see and touch, and consultants are in house at the central location of Green Sacramento at 1931 H Street in midtown. With buzz surrounding the green buildings popping up in Sacramento, there is no better time or place to be a builder with a sustainable outlook.

This Second Saturday, Green Sacramento Builders is having a launch party at 1931 H Street with music from Blvd Park and visual art by local artists. It is a great opportunity to learn more about green and sustainable design while enjoying the great weather, art, and music!

It definitely couldn't be a better time for a company like this to offer their services. Even cooler than helping to provide resources for people who want to build green buildings is offering to help DISPOSE of them properly after they are finished with the materials.

Casey, I don't think that is what they are talking about. Deconstruction refers to actually disassembling a house that is to be demolished and reutilizing the wood and other materials on other products, instead of just knocking the house over and putting the wood in a landfill. So no, they aren't DISPOSING of them--they are reusing them.

While it is preferable to restore and repair a historic home (it takes a whole lot less energy and materials to restore an existing building than to build a new one, even with "green" techniques) sometimes it is unavoidable. In that case, many of the deconstructed materials are still high-quality and useful: clear-heart hardwood of a quality and beauty that costs an arm and a leg today but used to be commonplace, or old-growth redwood that will outlast tree-farm redwood being cut down today. Reuse of lumber means a few less trees being cut down, and less materials in the landfill. Reuse of metal components provides authentic materials for home restoration that are less expensive and energy-intensive production than reproductions.

I have a few projects at home, I will be taking a look to see what I can use from them. Good to know.

Since being green has several components, I asked Green Builders what they plan to do to make their very ungreen planter area and their ungreen offensive asphalt parking lot and ungreen northern building border, more green.-- a kind of do by example. Their rep said they planned to do nothing

I agree that businesses, green or otherwise, should be looking at their impacts holistically. Do keep in mind that Green Sacramento and Green Sacramento Builders, in addition to the other tenants, are just that- tenants. They do not have the authority or permission to make modifications to the building surroundings. In this case they also do not have use of the parking lot- that is controlled separately by the building owner who is a partner in a local firm nearby. It is a subject worth taking up with the building owner, even if the implementation may have to wait until the economic climate is a little more stable.

Although it appears to be attached, the parking lot is actually owned and operated by somebody completely separate (Green Sac isn't even allowed to park there without being towed!). It's not fair to hold Green Sacramento accountable for things completely out of their control.
