City College is beginning a book club for faculty and staff called Campus-Wide Book Group Thursday Feb. 9th, 2012 in Rodda North 228 from 12-1pm and Friday Feb. 10th in Rodda South 329 from 12-1pm.

The book club was created by the faculty and staff the Basic Skills Initiative Steering Committee on the City College campus, and the book that the group will be reading and discussing this semester is called “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” by writer/renowned authority Beverly Daniel Tatum.

Tatum’s book is about racial identities and how essential it is when it comes to communication with racial and ethnic dividing.

“It’s not a student club,” said City College’s History professor Holly Piscopo, “The reason we are reading the book is to get a group of faculty and staff together for professional development.”

On Feb. 9th, the group will have their first discussion on defining the terms of the story and trying to understand blackness and whiteness in a white context.

The second discussion for the book club will be Thursday Mar. 8th, 2012 in Rodda North 228 from 12-1pm and Friday Mar. 9th in Rodda South 329 from 12-1pm. On Mar. 8th, the club will be discussing beyond black and white and how to break the silence.

If anyone has any questions regarding the book club, please contact Holly Piscopo at 916-650-2937.
