Thanks for posting this, Amabelle! I just passed here on my way to work and was Googling just a few minutes before you posted this to find out what happened (to no avail). You are on it!

Fortunately, no pedestrians were hurt from broken glass. Also, it was on 5th Street side of the building.

When are they going to tear that hazard down?! What a waste of taxpayer's money!

Unfortunately there is no money to tear it down - although it would provide some construction jobs temporarily! It is an older building - I hope to god it wasn't built with asbestos insulation. A friend of mine was a stateworker who worked in a high rise stateworker building that had to be decontaminated due to asbestos throughout the building. All the workers had to be relocated for 6 months to a different site - the building was rehabbed - then everyone was moved back in - it was a huge expense to make the building safe again.

I'm just relieved no pedestrians were walking by and injured......not to mention a negligence lawsuit that would have to be settled at taxpayers expense.

I live in that neighborhood and will be careful to avoid walking down that street!

It's not that old, it was built in 1992 on the cheap. The Wells Fargo Center across the street was built at about the same time for around $100 million while this building was constructed for around $45 million. You get what you pay for.

"The most well-known dysfunctional building in Sacramento"

and a little of it's history is contained in this 2010 Assembly Bill 151 authored by Dave Jones

This building has made allot of people sick from the continued mold problems; several floors are unusable because of the sickness.

From Wikipedia: The State Board of Equalization was created in 1879 by an amendment to the California Constitution. Its original mandate was to ensure that property tax assessments were uniform and equal across all counties in the state.[1]
...They could not be further from that, than they are now. Perhaps Karma?

When I enlarge the picture, it kind of looks like something collided with it. Perhaps an errant hawk? The last time this happened, several (more than one) windows were affected. That's the problem with high rises built on the cheap - they'll cost more to rend than the cost of building them.
