Region Builders, a building industry coalition founded by the Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange that includes thirteen esteemed local trade and professional associations and industry businesses, has endorsed Sacramento City Council Candidate Phyllis Newton for District 4.

Phyllis Newton is a long-time resident of Sacramento who has been civically engaged in public service with the City of Sacramento for nearly a decade, and is the front-runner to fill the Council seat being vacated by Councilmember Rob Fong. She has served on numerous city commissions and advisory committees, as well as sharing her expertise with multiple non-profit organizations in the region. Notably, Ms. Newton served as the Executive Director of an esteemed member association, the American Institute of Architects-Central Valley, which serves as a professional association of architects in seventeen California Counties. For the last 22 years Phyllis has worked as a practicing construction attorney specializing in the representation of urban design professionals in our region. She also currently serves as the unpaid volunteer Executive Director for Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, a non-profit organization providing technical assistance for disaster reconstruction efforts around the world.

Her number one priority will be making the City a better place to do business and creating jobs for the local community. She will strive to bring the Council together to help Sacramento reach its massive potential.

Bill Porter, Board President of Region Builders, explained how Region Builders was excited to support such a strong leader for City Council. “Ms. Newton understands the considerable challenges facing our local building industry, as well as its significance for our region’s economic recovery. We could not be happier to support such an outstanding candidate for Sacramento.”

Phyllis Newton described her appreciation for receiving such a strong early endorsement. “I am truly grateful to have the early support of an industry that has contributed so much to our local community. If elected, I will work tirelessly to remove roadblocks for economic growth, and create a vibrant local economy our City can be proud of,” stated Ms. Newton.

I'm not sure why this would be advertised. The needs of developers often conflict with that of the communities' and specifically the attentive and active voter (aka the voters who vote in June). The "Developer Candidate" label is not something voters have a positive bias towards. I'm not anti-development, I'm just pointing out the politics of District 4.

I am not against development either. Far from it. But there is smart growth and dumb growth and SRBE doesn't impress me as a group that knows or cares about the differences.

Thanks for the political ad Scott. Frankly, your group's endorsement is meaningless to those of us who live in District 4. We need to know where she stands on the issues that concern us and not the member's of your real estate developer's lobby. How many members of the SRBE actually live in District 4? I'm concerned about this candidate because SRBE has taken some rather regressive positions in the past.

@Mark

This endorsement means a lot to those in the business community. We are NOT A DEVELOPER ORGANIZATION, so please get your facts correct. We are a coalition of building industry associations and companies. The bulk of our membership is local contractors, architects, etc. These are the people who live in your community.

I have my facts straight, I was pointing out a political reality and perception. There are the facts and then there's what the voters perceive and understand.

Joshua you are a lobbyist. While technically you may have many members who are local contractors and architects your main support is from and for big developers. Your tricks might work with idiotic politicians but not with the public.

Mark, I think you are getting your organization's confused, as well as the make-up of our group. Many of our leadership live in District 4, including myself, so no need to worry there. Also, to disqualify their endorsement of a candidate because they are in the local business community (i.e. builders, design professionals, engineers) is completely off-base.

Nice try guys but I know exactly who you are. You are lobbyists. You claim to represent the broad range interests of all those involved in the building trade/construction industry but your main support comes from big real estate developers and in turn it's their interests you mainly support.

@ Mark,

This conversation has become unproductive. We are not lobbyists. That said, you should consider supporting Phyllis...that's who this article is really about.
