The Midtown Monthly blog is reporting that homeless advocates and charity workers are asking community members vigils this week as the police disband the homeless encampment known internationally as Tent City. In a letter to the Monthly, Greg Bunker of Francis House of Sacramento writes, "We are willing to be arrested on behalf of our homeless folks rather than see them be moved or be threatened with an 'arrest' if they do not move when they have NO SAFE PLACE to go!!!!"

Sister Libby Fernandez of Loaves & Fishes, Paula Lomazzi of SHOC and Mark Merin of Mark Merin Law Firm also signed the letter.

The letter calls on community members to "bare witness" to police action at the Tent City this week, even if they do not wish to participate in civil disobedience.

I wonder how many of the homeless advocates will take a homeless family home with them.... I doubt any.

I'm tired of people advocating something and while doing nothing but advocating.

The homeless don't want to mooch, if you offered them a place to stay their pride would prevent them (most of them) from taking you up on the offer anyway. They just want to be left to their lives, like totalderelict said. They know how to take care of themselves, they just want the means to do it. Tent city is centrally located, allowing them to get to the aid programs available and to get downtown to handle their business. This whole situation is a big mess.

This article leaves me wanting more information, but I definitely disagree with the disbanding of tent city. Like Mark, I feel that the area is centrally located and allows them access to get to the programs and resources they need to survive. Moving them accomplishes nothing for either them or the city.
