We have made a significant change to our contributor agreement. This is the agreement between The Sacramento Press and volunteer contributors who write articles.

The major change is that originally our agreement was structured like a newspaper or magazine. It gave The Sacramento Press an exclusive right to the articles published on The Sacramento Press. Now we share a nonexclusive right with all of our writers. They can remix, use, or even sell their work as they wish.

Original:
In consideration of the availability of the website to post your contribution, you hereby grant to us the sole and exclusive right (including any moral rights) and license throughout the world to produce, adapt, print, publish, copy, store in any medium by electronic means and otherwise exploit the contribution or any part of the contribution or any derivative of the contribution in all languages in every form or format whether now known or hereafter invented, including without limitation print, audio, digital and electronic form and in each case to license others to do any or all of the same. We shall have absolute discretion as to the exercise, sale or other dealing of the rights granted herein. You will retain copyright in the contribution. Consent for you to republish the contribution after the submission of the contribution to us for use in _________________________ without charge shall not be unreasonably withheld.

Revised:
You will retain full copyright in the contribution and nothing herein grants to us any ownership rights in the contribution. Thus, subject to limited grant to us as defined herein, you may produce, adapt, print, publish, copy, or otherwise exploit the contribution or any part of the contribution or any derivative of the contribution at your own discretion anywhere in the world and as any law may provide. However, in consideration of the availability of the website to post your contribution, you hereby grant to us a nonexclusive, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right (including any moral rights) to produce, adapt, print, publish, copy, store in any medium by electronic means and otherwise exploit the contribution or any part of the contribution or any derivative of the contribution in all languages in every form or format whether now known or hereafter invented, including without limitation print, audio, digital and electronic form and in each case to license others to do any or all of the same.

We spoke with several potential contributors who did not feel comfortable with our old contributor agreement. We examined our options with an intellectual property lawyer and feel confident that the revised agreement serves our needs while being more open for our contributors.

The new agreement also allows professional bloggers freedom to cross post on our site.

Please take your time and give us your feedback.

Ben this is a win-win for Sacramento Press and its contributors. It's a much more open agreement aligning better with your intended mission IMHO.

Thank you for thinking of the contributors! This just reinforces my support of the Sac Press, and my strong confidence that this will be a thriving and innovative news source.

Couldn't agree more -- this is especially important for freelancers who make a living writing. Participating in something like this would be challenging if time spent writing doesn't equal the chance to make money. By essentially sharing the rights with contributors, you've solved that problem.

Thank you! I am a new contributor, and had planned to clarify this agreement, but it appears you have already done so. I currently do not have any conflicts with others potentially wishing to publish my work, however, I certainly hope this changes in the future!

Its excellent that you thought of the contributors, which make this site a prime place to post work.

Thank you! This gives me more ease in my consideration to contribute to SacPress. I am very excited to see SacPress blow up in this area, and I am thrilled to be a part of that.

surely I would never even consider posting an article here with the original agreement - that is too much work for such little reward and then to lose my own copyright - no way. If you hire me to go out and do a story, its all yours ... but otherwise never. Good thing you have revised the agreement. I am surprised anyone at all would contribute under the original terms unless they are desperate to get published somewhere and are not aware of other options for on-line publication. It still amazes me how many onlne publications rely on hardworking writers to work for nothing or pennies. Its really a shame how its all set up to take advantage of writers.

We have a staff of reporters who are paid more than pennies. We also encourage members of our community to write because many people want to report news that is not reported elsewhere for whatever reason. We support these community contributors with free copy editing and free workshops as well as a full time position for recruitment and customer service.

It is neither free nor easy to do what we do but we believe that this is the best way we can serve our community.
