Garlic Shack, a Midtown restaurant that opened in in early July on the corner of 19th and J streets, appeared closed Wednesday afternoon and evening, with chairs stacked on tables and the vinyl “We’re Open” sign removed.

Owner Ken Powers did not return phone calls left by The Sacramento Press Wednesday, and workers at nearby businesses were not able to confirm whether the restaurant was closed for good or just on hiatus.

Gluten-free brown rice was the basis for the restaurant’s signature rice bowls, and most menu items featured garlic, with garlic fries being a favorite, as previously reported by The Sacramento Press.

Before Garlic Shack, the space housed Plum Blossom, an Asian-food restaurant.

The Sacramento Press will post updates as more information becomes available.

It COULD be because their prices were extremely high for the lunch-time crowd...the basis of any midtown business

They must have closed quickly. It still has a "Closed" sign indicating they will be back at 11:00. I think it's been up since Sunday. The tables are still set and the fixtures are up. I noticed all the signs were stacked on the side of the restaurant. Very sad to see another restaurant in midtown fail.

I respectfully disagree. Restaurants opening and closing is typical of any economic climate. New restaurants have opened or will be soon during the same time as recent closures. Examples: BarWest, Restaurant Thirteen, Firestone in the old CPK, and the new restaurant by the Golden Bear guys in tne old Hangar17 space. Even during the real estate and tech boom days, the place where R15/Bernardo now is failed TWICE. A restaurants closing comes for reasons much moreso along the lines of poor management, poor service, or poor food. Visibility doesn't even matter as much. In fact, lack of visibility or a certain degree of "secrecy" to a place is almost preferred and seen as "cooler" these days by many it seems. But the hope is people learn from failures and bounce back stronger and more experienced than before on their next attempt.

Meh. Who wanted to go to a place called the garlic shack? Of course, the economy has something to do with how quickly it came and went. In better times they might had been able to hold on. I also don't agree that this is about the over abundance of restaurants in the area. The high cost of running a business often starts with overpriced leases. Its not a secret that many business fail because their overhead is too high and the greedy property owners are a big part of the problem. Of course, we aren't supposed to say anything about this.

A greedy property owner didn't like my comment.

Not surprised. The food was awful--I mean it takes a lot of effort to screw up garlic fries...
