This Saturday female skateboarders and street artists are teaming up at Granite Skate Park, located on Ramona Avenue, to spend the afternoon skateboarding together and celebrating art.

From noon - 3 p.m. Few and Far, an organization working to create connections among female artists and skateboarders, will be hosting its first Few and Far Skate Jam. This is the first skate event that Few and Far has hosted but they “plan on making it an annual event,” said Joanna Mahaffy, the skateboard representative for Few and Far.

Few and Far is an organization that is based out of northern California and seeks to connect women interested in street art and skateboarding from around the globe.

Few and Far hosted its first mural project in Oakland this June where female graffiti artists from around the country came and collaborated on a large mural. This was the first of many mural projects they are working on completing around the country.

“Our vision is to get girls with similar interests together and to create a sense of community among female artists and skateboarders,” said Mahaffy. The event is open to the public and anyone who wants to support female artists and skateboard is welcome to come.

“In a field that is dominated by men, there will be women who are in community together,” said Jacqueline Carvajal, graphic designer for Few and Far. “Normally, I am the only girl at skate parks, but on Saturday at least 80 percent of the park will be women,” she added. Carvajal said that men are invited to the event and encouraged to skate but they are expecting the majority of attendants to be female.

At the event women will have a chance to skate on their own for about a minute and show off their skills. According to the city of Sacramento website, Granite Skate Park is one of the largest skate parks in the country and has eight bowls of varying intensities and a street course.

“We expect the girls who come to be at a variety of skill levels,” Mahaffy said. “What is great about this skate park is that it accommodates any of those. Skateboarding is not for the faint of heart. You fall a lot and there needs to be people to keep encouraging you,” she added.

Amandalynn and Ursula Young are two female artists who will be painting live at the skate park on Saturday. They will both be working on upcoming Few and Far mural projects. Each of their canvases will be auctioned off at the end of the event for one of skateboarders to take home. The money from the auction will go to support future Few and Far projects.

Mahaffy said there will be a booth for women to bring their baggy skateboard T-shirts that are made for men and have them altered on site to fit them better. There will be no cost for the alterations.

Karrilee Raymond and Melissa Denardo, volunteers for Few and Far, will be teaching women “simple styles that can be made from cuts and knots” to alter the shirts, said Mahaffy.

The event is free and the Wicked Wich sandwich truck will be on site selling gourmet sandwiches for lunch. For more information visit Few and Far’s website here
