Living in Portland Maine, one of my favorite things to do was go to a great neighborhood wing place. I would wait all day on my days off, for their happy hour special of all you can eat wings. The wings came in many flavors, they even came a flavor called Chernobyl; if you were able to eat a dozen, you got it for free and your picture on the wall..

When I moved back out to Sacramento, I was in search for wings, that were as good , as my neighborhood haunt back east. I tried Fanny Ann’s, Wing Stop, and to my own personnel shame even Hooters. I had gotten so desperate, I was even hitting every Asian buffet I could find, but always disappointed.

I had given up my search.

Then I heard a new bar was opening called Bar West.

I tried looking it up on the Googlesphere, after 10 minutes of getting listings for all Bars in West Sacramento, I finally figured out to put Sacramento, then Bar West , then found it.

I walked in around 930 on a Wednesday night. Walking in I realized, I did not exactly fit in, I should have done some recon. No Ed Hardy shirts for me. I decided togo with my Chuck Finely look, which consisted of a Hawaiian shirt and shorts.

The Bar was packed, and a waitress directed me to a cock tail table. The Bar had a Tiki Motif with Grass hanging from the ceiling , and surfboards hanging on the wall. I found it ironic I was the only one with a tropical shirt.

There are a least 10 big screen T V.s with football, baseball, ultimate fighting. There was even a documentary on the life of Bruce Lee..

There was a stair case leading up to a second level. My waitress informed , that Bar West was going to start lounge service in the near future.

Like most new bars in Sacramento this bar had decided to go with with an Internet Juke box, that seemed to be stuck the radio station 105.1. Don't get me wrong I am not country music snob, but to me Country is Johnny Cash, Waylon Jenning , Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Emmy Lou Harris. The Music that coming out starting to effect my equilibrium. An occasional Sublime, and Hip Hop song came on, but few and far between.

Seeing all the waitresses, I felt like I was in a Robert Palmer Video, All the waitress were petite with tight shirts that displayed their attributes. In my personal opinion any woman applying for a job, would not get it if they weighed over 125 lbs.

I started with my favorite local brew Lagunitas Draft which ran me 5.00, which is not too bad of a price for that part of Midtown. The Tiki Theme is reflected in the Cocktail drinks. There were at least 10 lemonade slushie drinks. There are two options on sizes for most of the drinks; 16 0z or what they call the fish bowl, which is 64 oz, and is meant to be shared, but I was told by a waitress , that a single person could order it by themselves .

I ordered a 16 oz bourbon slush. It tasted like a tropical pineapple drink., The drink had bourbon and sweet tea vodka. I could not taste the alcohol at all. If you have more than three of these type of drinks , you can easily start doing a Frank the Tank impersonation..

I finally decided to go for the wings,.. The Wings come in three different sizes, batch of 10, 20, or 50. Starting at $10 , and up to $40 You can get the wings in seven different flavors. teraki, BBQ, garlic parmesan, lemon pepper, Cajun, garlic BBQ, and sweet and sour. There were also degrees of spiciness, from mild to “Oh my God, I cant feel my tongue!!!!”

Reading the menu, I thought it was going to BBQ sauce in fused with garlic. Instead it was BBQ wings with a garlic sauce dripped all over it. The garlic sauce was so strong , the table next to me complained of the smell. I bit into the wings, expecting a semblance of what I had back east, but. what I got was slightly undercooked wings that tasted like a bulb of garlic.

I was given napkins, but this was the first wings place I had ever been to, that did not give me a wet naps, which can be annoying when you are grabbing your drinking glass.

For my main meal I decided to have one the six burger options, the cowbell burger., with bacon and a onion ring. I had the option of regular fries, sweet potato, or tater tots. Tatar tots of course.

The cowbell burger patty was organic and fresh, but the the bun was so thick, the only thing I could taste was the onion ring. The taters tots were addictive as hell. I was like Zoidberg with a plate of Popplers. Out of all the food Items, the tots were the only thing I actually finished.

I really hope this bar is not hoping to base it's food menu, on the belief, that their patrons , would be so drunk, that they cant tell the difference between good food and over priced pub grub. Spin Burger made the same mistake, and its doors closed, in less than a year.

I really dont know what this bar is trying to be; a sports bar, a country bar, a tiki bar, a wannabe Hooters ,or a lounge. Honesty this bar would be a better fit, in a strip mall in Roseville, or Granite Bay. . The bar does not seem to fit midtown. There is no sense of the grid,, no original art on the wall, nothing to connect it to the neighborhood it resides.

My wing quest will continue. Maybe I can convince the place back east to open a franchise here.

Currently my favorite wings in the grid can be found at Chicago Fire. I tend to like the spicier ones and Chicago Fire has wings with substantial heat. Substantial but not nuclear. My chief complaint about their wings is that they do tend to lack that perfect crispiness that excellent wings have, but I'll settle for slightly soggy when the flavor is so good.

Great enjoyable review. I loved your last article and this is a great addition, keep 'em comin.

Trevor is still trying to figure out the quirks. He recently let go of a bunch of inadequate staff and is hiring better ones. He reads the Yelp reviews, and articles written about his place and make the changes necessary. I'm sure he will see this one too, since a couple other articles were already written about it.

Can't help but have to say: Just 'cuz it's douchey-vibe does NOT mean we need it up here in Roseville. A lot of the people who go there are friends, family, industry people etc. And unfortunately, kinda on the douchey-end. We all know that the dbs invade downtown every weekend...and this would be a place maybe THEY would finally feel comfortable in?

Anyyway- he is still working on stuff is what it boils down to.

Maybe, I should have been more clear. I guess my overall point is that a Chotchkie's type theme, does not belong in the heart of the Sacramento Art community. I would also like to point out I never use a term, like douchy. I just wrote what I saw. it's a reader responsibility , to come up with their own conclusion.
The one Mistake I made in the Article, was not expanding on the fact, that I did receive good friendly service, even though, the waitress tried to rush me, because her shift was ending and needed to cash out.
I was confronted by a manager, who saw me taking notes, but let it go.

This place is hell and comes with the usual new (sacramento) restaurants stupidities, e.g. flat screens to distract the bad food, a motif that doesn't make sense, a "lounge" on the second floor, orange (fake tan) clientele and servers etc etc. This list goes on and on. (Not that there is anything fundamentally wrong with these)

What a missed opportunity, i almost want to shame the owners for, being, well, I don't know... boring, unimaginative. I don't understand why these new places don't reflect the neighborhood they are built in. ( bespoke, quaint, relaxed, charming, historic, innovative, creative, tolerant (yes I was called a fag by a patron) Why recreate the drab suburbs in midtown, as opposed to brining midtown to midtown?

I get it, people descend upon the center of the cities for entertainment, its a natural phenomenon. So why not then present them with something new.

Agreed, let this one finds its way home to a strip mall in Roseville.

Thanks! This article is very helpful because my husband and I had been wondering about the food at Bar West. We'll probably pass, especially since there's another new restaurant down the street, River Rock Tap House, that has a nice, casual vibe and great service from the bartender. (We haven't tried the food yet, just some of their beers.)

One side note: while the article was interesting and informative, the editing was a little rough.

Angelo if you wanted good food you should have gone to Red Lotus. It is the only place on that block that the food isn't secondary to the booze.

Look at red lotus. How are they doing? Just because a bar tries to appeal to the neighborhood doesnt mean the neighborhood will support it. Red lotus is great food, awesome craft cocktails, fantastic happy hour small bites all day. No one supported it and there doors will be closing very soon (unfortunately). Barwest owners are great friends of mine and although there are many things I would change ( were all tremendous critics when we don't own bars of our own), they are doing the best they can for owning and operating there first bar/restaurant. The place is doing over 5 figures a day 7 days a week. They aren't trying to be fancy, artsy, high class, or whatever else you feel is midtown-esque. It's a fun party bar with mediocre simple an easy fare. I would wait 6 months for another review. Let them work the kinks out. And yes. We're all still waiting for the "20% off button!" cheers and best of luck to Trevor and Todd! They've single handedly rejuvenated "the block"

First of all, thank you for validating my article.

I like to consider my self , up to speed on midtown gossip, and I have not heard any thing what so ever regarding Red Lotus closing. I hope not , because I really love their little park baos.

If Bar west is open in six months , I would be more than happy to go back and do another review . Hopefully, next time Sacramento Press will pick up the tab.

I don't believe Barwest is trying to be anything it's not. I've been nothing but impressed with the food each time I've gone, although I have noticed the service falls off as the place gets really busy, which, any bar or restaurant would have trouble keeping up with how busy they get. It's a West Coast theme, which doesn't mean tiki, sports, dive, country, lounge, etc... California is somewhat all of the above, and the mixed feel appeals to a lot of different people. If you want authentic Sacramento Bar, then maybe someone should open up a Gold Rush or Sutters Fort-themed bar... something tells me they might not be huge hits.

I think asking every new bar in Midtown to be "more Midtown" would create a hand full of the same thing around here. They are doing something different, and it's obviously working, despite the somewhat uncultured clientele. My only gripe is that they let the bar get too packed, trying to avoid a line from forming outside the bar. It makes ordering drinks, or even moving from one side of the bar to the next near impossible. But, knowing the NIMBYs and the noise issues with the block, it's better to have them in the bar than outside, I suppose.

One thing the bar does well is open up nicely to the neighborhood with the garage door entry and patio. When the place isn't overly packed, it does make for a nice, casual place to stop in and kill some time with your 'bros.'

It's funny, but I kinda agree. Hear me out fellow Midtowners!

1. Not all of us have to frequent every restaurant or bar in the area. If there is a bar that attracts a crowd you don't like at your favorite place? Fantastic, fewer of the people you don't like will be invading your favorite place. We have a choice and I say a diverse scene is good for all of us.

2. What is so terrible or frightening about midrange food and drinks. Around here there are tons of amazing and inexpensive eats and drinks. We have fabulous dive bars that may not get media attention, but don't need it. They are stacked with loyal customers from right down the street and they aren't going anywhere. On the other hand, there are lots of very posh spots to try fancy cocktails or eat amazing food. One thing we actually lack is a clean place where you can meet a bunch of people around a table, eat some food and have some drinks. We need a couple places that are simply "inoffensive" to the general population.

3. Bar West is new new new. I'm waiting to see what develops but I really believe in the management. I hope everything about the place improves over time. That includes food, service and limiting negative impacts on the neighborhood. This is a tough economy in which to learn on the fly, but these are restaurant industry vets who have the chops to do just that. I'm not even about to judge a little until this place has a track record.
